crunch time (again)

While undefeated Oxford High is the highest ranked Mississippi school in two different national polls, Northwest Rankin definitely rates attention. The Cougars, also ranked in the Top 25 by both MaxPreps and Baseball America, are 29-2 headed into the MHSAA Class 6A North championship series against DeSoto Central. The Cougars, coached by Jeff McClaskey, feature Shelton Wallace (.464, 25 steals), Ian Ladner (.409, five homers, 38 RBIs) and Hunter Smith (9-0, 0.96 ERA). They are 4-0 in the postseason and have won eight straight overall. Both of NWR’s losses were by one run. DeSoto Central (24-9) is led by the highly touted Austin Riley, hitting .456 with 11 homers and 6-2 with a 2.75 ERA as a pitcher. Keegan James hits .336, and Dallas Woolfolk is 7-1, 2.07. In the 6A South finals, defending state champion Oak Grove (24-7) meets Biloxi (21-11) in the best-of-3. The Warriors have the 1-2 pitching punch of Drew Boyd (9-0, 1.04) and J.C. Keys (8-0, 1.01) and a hot hitter in Matthew Guidry (.426). Biloxi counters with the arms of Austin Creel (7-1, 2.01) and Blake Johnson (7-2, 2.00) and the bat of Darrell Montiforte (.296, three homers). In 5A, Oxford puts its unblemished mark (32-0) on the line against New Hope in the North finals. P.S. The SWAC Tournament begins Wednesday in New Orleans. Jackson State, the two-time defending champion, meets Southern University and Alcorn State plays West Division winner Texas Southern in the opening round of the eight-team event. The tourney winner earns an automatic NCAA Tournament bid (though Southern is ineligible). With probable league MVP Melvin Rodriguez (.444, seven homers, 72 RBIs) in its lineup, JSU certainly has a shot at a three-peat. … In Tyler, Texas, on Wednesday, third-seeded Millsaps faces 4-seed Whitworth in the first round of the NCAA Division III West Regional. … At Eunice, La., on Thursday, Hinds Community College meets East Mississippi and Northwest Mississippi plays LSU-Eunice in the first round of the NJCAA Division II Region 23 Tournament. No. 1-ranked Hinds is the defending region champ.

majors to play on

Only 14 at-large bids to the NCAA Division III Tournament were handed out. Millsaps got one. The Majors (28-12) will play in the West Regional, which starts Wednesday at Tyler, Texas. The regional features four conference champions, including host UT-Tyler, 34-10 out of the American Southwest. The Majors’ chances of getting a regional bid appeared slim when they were eliminated at home by Rhodes in the tournament phase of the Southern Athletic Association postseason. Rhodes and SAA regular season champ Birmingham-Southern also made the 56-team NCAA field. Under longtime coach Jim Page, Millsaps has made several regional appearances and reached the D-III College World Series in 2013. League player of the year Keith Shumaker leads the current club, hitting .395 and posting an 8-2, 2.39 pitching ledger. Isaac Glenn also had a huge year, batting .446 with four homers and 44 RBIs, and William Chenoweth hit .366 with five bombs. Smokey Ethridge (5-4, 2.35) is the Majors’ No. 2 starter. Another stat worth knowing: Millsaps is 6-6 away from home this season.

numbers to crunch

Former Southern Miss star Brian Dozier hit his eighth career leadoff homer on Sunday in Minnesota’s loss at Cleveland. It was Dozier’s second homer in as many games and fourth of the season. He hit 23 last year. … Ole Miss alum Seth Smith, who occasionally leads off for Seattle, is batting .266 after a 1-for-3 on Sunday. The left-handed hitter has two homers and eight RBIs. Of his 79 at-bats, 76 have been against right-handers. … UM product Zack Cozart went 3-for-4 for Cincinnati against the Chicago White Sox and is hitting .324 for the year, .361 over his last 10 games. … Billy Hamilton, the ex-Taylorsville High star who has 16 steals for the Reds, saw his average fall to .203 after an 0-for-5. He struck out three times, running his total to 25 in 118 at-bats. Hamilton had 15 bunt hits in 2014, but defenses are adjusting this season: He has none so far. … Former Ole Miss standout Chris Coghlan is 4-for-33 in May and is at .189 for the year for the Chicago Cubs. He has three homers but just four RBIs. … Mississippi State product Mitch Moreland is on a rehab assignment (elbow surgery) with Texas’ Triple-A Round Rock club. He is 0-for-7. … UM alum Phil Irwin, who has some big league time, is 1-4 with a 6.60 ERA for kt wiz in the Korean Baseball Organization. … A host of former Mississippi Braves have gotten opportunities this season in Atlanta’s bullpen, which looks like a major weakness for this remodeled team. Brandon Cunniff (2.38 ERA) and Ian Thomas (2.70) have fared OK, but Cody Martin (3.86) has taken the loss in two straight games and Juan Jaime (6.75), John Cornely (four runs in one inning) and Williams Perez (four runs in 1/3 inning) have not impressed.

What a Saturday in Mississippi. In Oxford, there was the jaw-dropping comeback by Ole Miss to sweep the series against Mississippi State. In Hattiesburg, Southern Miss made a comeback of its own to beat Charlotte and extend its win streak to eight games. And in Raymond, Hinds Community College blasted Northwest Mississippi 14-3 to claim its eighth state championship. Hinds, 41-5 and ranked No. 1 in NJCAA Division II, went 3-0 in the MACJC tourney, getting outstanding pitching efforts from Randy Bell, Derek Martin and Casey Sutton. Quade Smith was the hitting hero in the finale, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs. USM, now 30-16-1 and 15-10 C-USA, got brilliant mound work from Cody Carroll, Luke Lowery and Ryan Milton in Friday’s 1-0 win over Charlotte. Down 5-0 early on Saturday, the Eagles rallied to win 11-10 in 10 innings, Michael Sterling scoring the game-winner on a throwing error that followed an infield hit by Connor Barron. Game 3 of that series is today. But, of course, the events at Oxford-University Stadium, witnessed by crowds totaling 27,871, trumped all. On Thursday, the Rebels (28-24, 14-13 SEC) got two big hits and three RBIs from Errol Robinson in a 4-3 win. On Friday, Sikes Orvis belted a home run and drove in four runs all told in a 13-10 victory. And on Saturday, down 7-2 in the ninth, the Rebels battled back against a crumbling State bullpen to win 8-7 in 10 innings. Colby Bortles had a game-tying, two-out, two-run hit in the ninth, and Nic Perkins knocked in the game-winner in the 10th. Orvis had two more homers on Saturday, boosting his total to 14. Wyatt Short, the sophomore left-hander from Southaven, worked a perfect 10th to earn the win on Saturday after notching saves on both Thursday and Friday. Short is 4-1 with nine saves. The devastated Bulldogs fell to 24-27, 8-19 and are in real danger of missing the SEC Tournament. P.S. Worth noting: In Pearl on Saturday, the Mississippi Braves beat the Biloxi Shuckers 5-2 in 10 innings to clinch the series with Game 5 still to play today. The M-Braves lost the inaugural game between the two Southern League clubs on Wednesday but have now won three straight.

Brian Dozier didn’t produce a hit for Minnesota on Thursday, but the ex-Southern Miss standout was hardly unproductive. He drew a walk, scored a run and made two sensational leaping snags at second base to help the surging Twins put the wraps on an 8-3 homestand with a 6-5 win over Oakland. The Twins are 16-13, creeping up on Kansas City and Detroit in the American League Central. Dozier is hitting .293 over his last 10 games, with three walks, nine runs and nine RBIs. For the season, he is batting just .236, but, much like last year, he is producing runs, which is what it’s really all about in baseball. Dozier has scored 21 runs and driven in 14 in 28 games. In 2014, he batted .242 but was second in MLB with 112 runs and drove in 71. Dozier has just two homers and two steals this year, so he is behind the pace of 2014 when he was a 20-20 man. But those numbers, homers in particular, seem to come in bunches. Worth noting, too: He hasn’t made an error in the field. P.S. The Twins’ win came at the expense of struggling A’s starter Drew Pomeranz, the Ole Miss alum who fell to 1-3 with a 5.12 ERA. … Ex-Rebels star Zack Cozart, out since Sunday when he was hit by a pitch on the wrist and then by a ground ball on the finger tip, reportedly could be back in the Cincinnati lineup tonight. The shortstop was seen wearing a T-shirt with the word “almost” taped to it on Thursday. He is batting .304 with five homers and 12 RBIs.

The state championship is a nice catch, to be sure, but the four junior colleges participating in the MACJC tournament in Raymond might have one eye on a bigger prize: the region crown. The double-elimination state tourney starts today at Moss Field with East Mississippi Community College playing Northwest Mississippi and host Hinds meeting Meridian. Three of the four – the team that goes 2-and-out is done — will advance to the NJCAA Division II Region 23 Tournament at Eunice, La., from May 14-17. The region winner goes to the juco World Series. Hinds did not win the state title last year but did win the region and then went all the way to the championship game of the World Series. The Eagles, 38-5 and back up to No. 1 in the country, are loaded again. Jordan Washam (.385, six homers, 33 RBIs) leads a lineup full of mashers, and the Eagles have arms (Randy Bell, Houston Case, Austin Sanders, et. al) in abundance. EMCC, Northwest and Meridian finished 2-3-4 in the regular season standings, and all are now ranked in the Top 20. But they were a collective 0-6 against HCC. P.S. Waiting in the wings for the three surviving Mississippi schools is No. 2 LSU-Eunice. The Bengals are 41-9, 24-3 at Bengal Stadium. Freshman Steven Sensley is batting .373 with 17 homers and 63 RBIs. Mitch Sewald is 11-1 with a 2.04 ERA, and lefty Ben Braymer is 6-1, 2.51 with 113 strikeouts in 71 2/3 innings. Beating that bunch at their place for the region championship could be a tall order.

something new — sorta

The first of presumably many Mississippi Braves-Biloxi Shuckers games will go down tonight at Trustmark Park in Pearl. Perhaps a rivalry will develop, who knows? The teams are in the same division – the South – in the Southern League, and the Shuckers (a Milwaukee Brewers affiliate) are tied for first with a 16-9 record despite playing only road games. (This five-game series was supposed to be played on the Coast, but MGM Park isn’t finished yet.) The M-Braves are 11-12 and in the midst of a 15-game homestand. Intra-state battles among professional clubs were once a common thing in Mississippi. The last time Biloxi had a minor league team was in 1908, when the Gulfport-Biloxi Sand Crabs played in the Cotton States League, which included the Jackson Senators, as well as teams in Vicksburg, Columbus and Meridian. The Cotton States League, a low-level minor league which operated off and on from 1902-55, also had teams at various times in Cleveland, Clarksdale, Greenville, Greenwood, Hattiesburg, Natchez, Yazoo City, Laurel and Brookhaven. In 1921, the Mississippi State League consisted of four Magnolia State cities: Jackson, Clarksdale, Greenwood and Meridian. Jackson, Meridian and Vicksburg also had teams at times in the Southeastern League, which operated in the early to mid-1900s. As recently as 2000, the independent Texas-Louisiana League included the Jackson DiamondKats and the Greenville Bluesmen. In 1997, the indy Big South League featured teams in Meridian, Greenville and Tupelo. Still, Game 1 of the Mississippi-Biloxi series is something special. The pitching matchup tonight could be a good one: Jason Hursh (0-1, 8.50 ERA), an Atlanta prospect, against Brooks Hall (3-0, 0.96). The Shuckers’ Orlando Arcia, rated the Brewers’ No. 1 prospect by mlb.com, is second in the SL in hitting at .381, and Nick Ramirez is tied for the league lead with six home runs. P.S. Former M-Braves star Jose Peraza, Atlanta’s top prospect, is on a roll at Triple-A Gwinnett. The second baseman is batting .394 over his last 10 games and is at .320 for the year, with two triples, nine steals and 12 runs in 25 games.

winging it

In baseball, good things come to those who … pitch. And Southern Miss can pitch. The Golden Eagles (28-16-1, 13-10 C-USA) have a staff ERA of 3.03, which ranks among the top 20 in the nation. They’ve got seven shutouts, tied for fifth-most in NCAA Division I. They are coming off a three-game home sweep of Marshall in which they limited the Thundering Herd to two runs. None of the Eagles’ three starters allowed a run. Cody Carroll, the league pitcher of the week, threw a three-hitter. James McMahon, now 9-1 with a 1.88 ERA, worked six scoreless innings, and Kirk McCarty (4-1, 2.58) was unscathed over 7 2/3. Tim Lynch has swung a big stick (.331, nine homers, 30 RBIs) and three other regulars are over .300. But it’s USM’s pitching that impresses the most, especially in this season of the livelier ball. At one point during the Marshall series, the staff’s streak of consecutive innings without allowing an earned run reached 39. “I’ve been (coaching) 31 years, so I’m not going to say I haven’t (seen such a streak),” coach Scott Berry told the Hattiesburg American. “But that’s a pretty good string, I know that.” Light-hitting Charlotte comes to Hattiesburg this weekend for a conference series at Taylor Park, where USM is 16-7 — and where the C-USA Tournament will be held May 20-24. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the first USM team to make the NCAA Tournament field. That Hill Denson-coached club included Damon Pollard, Scotty Jurich, Todd Nace, Kerry Valrie, Greg Cole and Kenny Graves, all of whom were among the group in town for a reunion over the weekend. It would be a fitting tribute if the current club also earned a regional bid. That pitching certainly gives them hope.

A player’s first career MLB home run will always be a delectable memory, but Joey Butler got the additional spice of hitting his over the Green Monster at Fenway Park. The former Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College standout from Pascagoula went deep Monday for Tampa Bay, belting a two-run shot off Boston’s Clay Buchholz. Butler was playing just his second game for the Rays, who called him up on Sunday. Butler, 29, a 6-foot-2, 220-pound right-handed hitter, is 6-for-23 in the big leagues, his at-bats spread over three seasons with three teams. He finished 2014 in Japan, signed with Tampa Bay in the off-season and put up good spring numbers to earn a Triple-A roster spot. … Former Ole Miss star Seth Smith hit his second homer of the year for Seattle, but his round-tripper was a bit overshadowed by teammate Nelson Cruz’s MLB-leading 14th, a 429-foot bomb. … Former Mississippi Braves went on a wild hit parade on Monday: Yunel Escobar produced five for Washington, Jeff Francoeur four for Philadelphia, Jordan Schafer three for Minnesota, Andrelton Simmons two for Atlanta, Jason Heyward two for St. Louis and Evan Gattis one (plus his 18th RBI) for Houston. … St. Louis is 19-6, the best record in baseball and the team’s best 25-game start in modern franchise history. Oddly, Ole Miss alum Lance Lynn, who has 48 wins over the previous three seasons, has contributed just one victory to the hot start. He is 1-2 with a 3.07 ERA in five outings and is scheduled to go again on Wednesday against the Chicago Cubs and Jon Lester.
