out of kilter

In his first game off the injured list, Mississippi State product Jordan Westburg hit a home run for Baltimore. Unfortunately for the Orioles, the homer came in the ninth inning of Tuesday night’s 5-3 loss to Detroit. The Orioles, perhaps the most disappointing team in the big leagues, had entered the opener of this series having won seven of nine. Westburg and center fielder Cedric Mullins were activated from the IL. “I think everybody in Baltimore is excited,” O’s interim manager Tony Mansolino said pregame. Detroit, with the best record (44-24) in baseball, didn’t seem to notice, building a 5-1 lead by the fifth inning. Baltimore managed just six hits. And so it goes for the O’s. They are now 26-39, dead last in the American League East. Westburg was an All-Star at third base in 2024, when he hit .264 with 18 homers and 63 RBIs. A big season was expected of him and this team, which went 91-71 in 2024 and made the playoffs. But like many of his teammates, Westburg scuffled out of the gate. When he went down with a hamstring injury on April 28, he was hitting .217. He now has five homers but just seven RBIs. His numbers are bound to improve, but the team is in such a deep hole, and its pitching in such a fix, improvement in the standings could be a tall order. … Home runs were kind of a thing for Mississippians on Tuesday. In MLB, Nathaniel Lowe hit his ninth for Washington, Matt Wallner his fifth for Minnesota and Nick Fortes his second for Miami. In the minors, Reed Trimble (Baltimore system), Braden Montgomery (Chicago White Sox) and Brennon McNair (Kansas City) went yard. And in the independent Frontier League, Travis Holt and Karell Paz homered for the Mississippi Mud Monsters in a road win at Joliet. P.S. He didn’t hit one out, but Konnor Griffin went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run in his High-Class A debut for Greensboro in the Pittsburgh system. Griffin, first-round pick out of Jackson Prep last summer, hit .338 with nine homers in Low-A ball and led the Florida State League in several categories before his promotion.

At Pearl, the Mississippi Mud Monsters wrapped up a 4-1 homestand with a twinbill split Sunday against Florence (Ky.) at Trustmark Park. In the 11-2 win in Game 2, Kyle Booker homered and drove in three runs to back the strong start of Rodney Theopile. Nick Hassan went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run for the independent Mud Monsters. Booker, a former DeSoto Central High star who spent three years at Tennessee, is batting .327 with three homers and 18 RBIs on the year. He had two of the Mud-sters’ three hits in a 4-0 loss in Sunday’s opener. Mississippi is 13-14 in its inaugural Frontier League season. After a 12-game road trip, the next homestand starts June 24.
At Biloxi, the Double-A Shuckers whipped Montgomery 6-4 at Keesler Federal Park to win the Southern League series 5 games to 1. The first-place Shuckers are 35-22. Brock Wilken, a highly rated Milwaukee prospect, hit a grand slam, and former Magnolia Heights standout Cooper Pratt, another top prospect, went 3-for-4 with an RBI, a run and two steals. Wilken leads the SL with 15 homers and 35 RBIs. The Shuckers are celebrating their 10th anniversary season as an SL club.
At New Albany, the college boys of the Cotton States League played a pair of doubleheaders in BNA Bank Park with league-leader Tallahatchie going 1-0-1 vs. Tippah County and North Delta taking two from Hill Country. Houston Green, an Itawamba Community College alum, drove in two runs for Tallahatchie to back the three-hit pitching of Jake Thomas and Sam Brumbaugh in their 5-1 win. The Rascals are 4-0-1. Green is 6-for-12 on the young season, and Thomas is 2-0 with a 1.12 ERA. For North Delta, Eli Akins, a Delta State alum, threw a one-hitter in a 2-0 win against Hill Country after Connor Edge (ICC) tossed a three-hitter and Hayden Short knocked in three runs in the Dealers’ 10-1 victory in the opener.
P.S. Madison Central High product Spencer Turnbull has been added to Toronto’s active roster. The veteran right-hander, a recent free agent signee, had a 2.65 ERA in 17 games for Philadelphia before a lat injury in June ended his 2024 season. He has a 4.26 career ERA over 78 games. … Braden Montgomery, another Madison Central alum, had a four-hit game Sunday for High-Class A Winston-Salem and boosted his average there to .263. Montgomery is a highly rated prospect in the Chicago White Sox’s chain.

game of adjustments

Konnor Griffin, a year removed from Jackson Prep, has made a remarkably smooth transition to pro ball. Playing at the Low-Class A level, the ninth overall MLB draft pick from 2024 is batting .338 with nine home runs, 36 RBIs, 49 runs and 26 steals through 50 games for the Pittsburgh affiliate. He was 3-for-5 with an inside-the-park homer on Saturday, ripping around the bases when two outfielders had a tough time picking up his shot to the wall in right-center. He’s making this look easy, which it is not. As he moves up the minor league ladder, Griffin will encounter speed bumps. It’s inevitable. He’ll have to make adjustments. Baseball is a game of adjustments. It’s a trite phrase — but very true. Many a highly regarded Mississippi prospect has scuffled at various levels of the game. Some adjust, some can’t. Injuries can be a factor. Gunnar Hoglund, a first-round pick out of Ole Miss in 2021, made the big leagues with the A’s last month. He is 1-3 with a 6.40 ERA and on the injured list, where he has spent time before. When he returns, some adjustments will be necessary. Former Mississippi State standout Jake Mangum finally made the majors this year in his sixth pro season. He hit .311 for Tampa Bay in April, went on the IL and is just 5-for-29 since he returned. “There are good days and bad days,” he told forbes.com in a recent interview. “When you fail, don’t be too hard on yourself.” In other words, reevaluate and forge ahead. Will Bednar, a first-rounder out of State in 2021, is in Double-A with San Francisco. He has a 9.56 ERA. Landon Sims, the 34th overall pick from MSU in 2022, is making the big adjustment to Double-A in the Texas system. He has a 4.91 ERA in 20 games. Ex-Ole Miss star Jacob Gonzalez was the 15th overall pick by the Chicago White Sox in 2023. He reached Double-A in 2024 but struggled there. Back at that level this year, he appears to have figured some things out. He is batting .257 with four homers and 21 RBIs. Tough times have shadowed former Southern Miss star Reed Trimble, who has battled injuries since being drafted 65th overall in 2021. He is at Double-A in Baltimore’s system, hitting .069 in 10 games. He is at .237 in 153 minor league games. Also on the Orioles’ Chesapeake roster is Ole Miss product Anthony Servideo, a third-rounder back in 2020. He is batting .171 for his career, having reached Triple-A for a time in 2024. The game ain’t easy. But if they keep giving you a uniform, you keep grinding, looking for the right adjustments.

short hops

Worth noting from pro ball: Desperate for healthy arms, the Los Angeles Dodgers signed ex-Mississippi State standout — and Kansas City Royals cast-off — Chris Stratton and had him in their bullpen for Monday’s game against Cleveland; he didn’t pitch in a 7-2 L.A. win. MLB vet Stratton had a 7.94 ERA for the Royals before his release. (One wonders if ex-Bulldogs star Hunter Renfroe, also cut loose by K.C., might also land a new team. The veteran outfielder was hitting .182 with no homers.) … Drew Pomeranz, former Ole Miss star, made his 13th straight scoreless appearance Monday for the Chicago Cubs in their win against Colorado. Back in The Show for the first time since 2021, the big lefty is 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA over 12 2/3 innings for the first-place club. … MSU product Adam Frazier has started to click at the plate for Pittsburgh, batting .348 over his last 15 games. He is at .260 with 14 RBIs and 13 runs for a disappointing team. … Blaine Crim, the former Mississippi College slugger, is getting another shot with Texas. He was 0-for-11 during his first call-up. … The normally slick-fielding Austin Riley, the DeSoto Central High alum, has been charged with five errors in his last 15 games for Atlanta. Braves manager Brian Snitker said third baseman Riley had gotten bad hops on some of those “errors.” … Down in Mexico, ex-Ole Miss ace and erstwhile big leaguer Chris Ellis, 32, has nine saves and a 3.07 ERA in 15 games for Monterrey. … Former Rebels star Houston Roth, a 2019 draftee by Baltimore, has reached Triple-A and worked 2 2/3 scoreless innings in his Norfolk debut. The right-hander from Oxford has a 1.32 ERA in nine games overall this season. … MSU product Colton Ledbetter, now in the Tampa Bay chain, ranks fifth in the Double-A Southern League in hitting (.284) and third in stolen bases (17). He also has three homers and 19 RBIs for Montgomery. … Ex-DeSoto Central standout Blaze Jordan is having a red-hot May at Double-A Portland in the Boston system. Jordan, only 22 in his fifth pro season, is batting .379 (.481 OBP) with five homers and 17 RBIs this month. He’s up to .306 for the year with 30 RBIs. … Ole Miss product Brandon Johnson leads the Texas League with seven saves and as a 0.79 ERA at Northwest Arkansas, the Royals’ Double-A affiliate. … Jurrangelo Cijntje, first-rounder out of MSU last summer, has won four straight starts with a 2.05 ERA at High-A Everett in the Seattle system. The switch-pitcher, who is throwing mostly righty, has a 4.12 ERA in 11 appearances overall. … Khal Stephen, drafted in Round 2 out of MSU last year by Toronto, went 3-0 with a 2.06 ERA at Low-A Dunedin and yielded one run in three innings in his High-A debut for Vancouver in Toronto’s organization. … And still out there raking in A-ball are former state prep stars and 2024 first-round picks Braden Montgomery (Madison Central) and Konnor Griffin (Jackson Prep). Montgomery, now in High-A in the White Sox’s system, is batting .299 with seven homers and 37 RBIs. Griffin, in Low-A with Pittsburgh, is at .307 with eight homers, 27 RBIs and 18 steals.

for openers

Opening day for the Mississippi Mud Monsters, the new independent team, is Thursday at Trustmark Park in Pearl. Opening day is always special. When it is punctuated with a win by the home team, it is even moreso. Over the last 50 years, there have been a lot of opening days for pro teams in central Mississippi, every year since 1975, in fact, save for 2001 (no team) and 2020 (COVID shutdown). There are some around who might recall the very first opening day, 50 years ago, at Smith-Wills Stadium, where the Double-A Jackson Mets beat Arkansas 6-4 in a Texas League game. A crowd of 2,800 turned out on a rainy day — and a love affair between city and team began. If you were there in 1984, when Lenny Dykstra put on a show for the JaxMets in a 6-0 win over Tulsa, you remember it. In 1985, Biloxi’s own Barry Lyons belted a walk-off homer for the JaxMets. Both the ’84 and ’85 Mets teams, stocked with future big leaguers, would win league titles. The Jackson Generals, the Houston affiliate that followed the Mets into Smith-Wills in 1991, won their inaugural game at Smith-Wills, 3-2 over Shreveport on a Rusty Harris pinch-hit single in the eighth inning. The 1993 Generals won their first five home games, all against Tulsa, managed by Jackson native Stan Cliburn. The ’93 Gens, featuring Roberto Petagine, Brian Hunter and Jackson’s own Fletcher Thompson, would go on to win the TL pennant. On opening day in 1995, Hattiesburg’s Kary Bridges hit a memorable walk-off bomb for the Gens. The independent Jackson DiamondKats won their first and only home opener in 2000, getting a game-winning hit in the eighth inning from Tupelo’s Willie Gardner. In 2003, the indy Jackson Senators won their opening day game, behind the pitching of Purvis native and staff ace Kenny Rayborn, and would go on to win the Central League championship. Trustmark Park formally opened 20 years ago in April, when the Double-A Mississippi Braves played their much-anticipated home opener. The game drew a crowd of 6,000-plus. That 2005 opening day lineup featured future big leaguers Brian McCann, Jeff Francoeur, Gregor Blanco, Scott Thorman, Anthony Lerew and Luis Hernandez. The manager was Brian Snitker. Alas, the M-Braves lost to Montgomery 11-6. But it was opening day, and it was still special. Thursday will be, too.

it’s a process

Though the power tool has not yet clicked on for Dakota Jordan, the Mississippi State product has assembled some impressive stats in what is essentially his first pro season. Jordan, a fourth-round draftee in 2024 and currently San Francisco’s No. 6 prospect, ranks in the top 10 in the Low-Class A California League in hits (31), RBIs (21) and stolen bases (11). He also has scored 18 runs, 13th in the league. After a 2-for-4 effort on Tuesday, he is batting .298 (12th in the CL) with one homer, four doubles and two triples in 27 games for San Jose. Canton native Jordan, a two-sport star at Jackson Academy before playing baseball only at MSU, has what MLB Pipeline called “the quickest bat in the 2024 draft.” He hit 30 homers in two years with the Bulldogs and won the state’s Ferriss Trophy last year. His power and speed tools were highly rated by pro scouts. But he slipped to the fourth round in the draft, perhaps due to concerns about his strikeout tendencies and outfield defense. The Giants gave him a $1.9 million bonus to sign last summer; at this stage, it looks like a good investment. If he continues to hit around .300, the home runs will surely come. … Ex-Madison Central High star Braden Montgomery, the Chicago White Sox’s No. 5 prospect (MLB Pipeline), hit his first two homers at High-A Winston-Salem on Tuesday. The switch-hitter, drafted in the first round last summer out of Texas A&M, is batting .360 in seven games since being promoted from Low-A Kannapolis. … Ole Miss alum Cooper Johnson, now in the Texas organization, went 2-for-5 in his first game for Triple-A Round Rock; the 27-year-old catcher was hitting .267 with three homers at Double-A Frisco. P.S. After falling to West Alabama 12-6 Tuesday in the Gulf South Conference Tournament, Mississippi College awaits the May 11 NCAA Division II Selection Show to see if its season will continue in a regional. MC is 33-21, including wins over top-seeded Delta State and No. 2-seed Valdosta in the GSC tourney at Oxford, Ala. DSU (32-18) is also hoping for an NCAA Tournament at-large bid.

sitting on ready

Tim Elko isn’t ranked among the Top 30 prospects in the Chicago White Sox’s system, but there isn’t another of their minor leaguers having a better season. The former Ole Miss star leads the Triple-A International League in OPS (on base-plus-slugging), ranks tied for second in homers and fourth in batting average. The 26-year-old first baseman/DH hit his seventh homer for Charlotte on Friday after hitting two out on Thursday. He is batting .355 with a 1.116 OPS and 16 RBIs in 21 games. Drafted in the 10th round in 2022 — after leading the Rebels to the national championship — Elko has hit .292 with 58 homers and 211 RBIs in four pro seasons. The White Sox have the worst record (6-20) in the American League, but they also have one of the richest farm systems. Yet most of their prospects — including No. 5 Braden Montgomery (Madison Central High alum) and No. 13 Jacob Gonzalez (Ole Miss product) — aren’t yet ready for prime time. Elko, who isn’t on Chicago’s 40-man roster, just might be. … Gonzalez, 22, a lefty-hitting middle infielder, was a first-round pick in 2023 and is batting .258 (.352 OBP) in his first full season at Double-A Birmingham; he is currently riding a five-game hit streak that has boosted his average almost 50 points. Outfielder Montgomery, 22, the 12th overall pick (by Boston) last summer, is raking at Low-Class A Kannapolis: .323, three homers, 19 RBIs, six steals.

taking up arms

Doug Nikhazy is going to The Show, Brandon Woodruff moved a step closer to returning to the majors and Garrett Crochet and J.T. Ginn, both starting in MLB games Thursday, took some lumps. Indeed, it was quite the attention-grabbing day for Mississippi-connected pitchers in pro ball. … Nikhazy, an All-America pick at Ole Miss and a second-round pick by Cleveland in 2021, will join the Guardians today as they host Boston, reportedly to work out of the bullpen. The left-hander had a 3.44 ERA in four starts at Triple-A Columbus this season and carries a 3.87 career ERA in the minors. … Woodruff, former Mississippi State star, threw five shutout innings for Triple-A Nashville in his third rehab start as he comes back from 2023 shoulder surgery. The erstwhile Milwaukee ace, 46-26 in his MLB career, looks on track to rejoin Brewers early next month. … In MLB, Crochet, the Ocean Springs High product, gave up four runs in five innings, walking a career-high five, and took a loss for Boston against Seattle. The 2024 All-Star, in his first season with the Red Sox, is 2-2, 1.95. … Ex-MSU star Ginn, making his third start of 2025 for the A’s, faced off against Texas and Jacob deGrom. Ginn took a shutout into the fourth inning before allowing three solo homers that chased him from the game. His ERA rose to 4.61, but he got a no-decision in a game the A’s won late. DeGrom, the two-time Cy Young Award winner, went 5 1/3 (two runs). … Also on the bump Thursday was MSU alum and MLB vet Dakota Hudson, pitching for Triple-A Salt Lake in the Los Angeles Angels’ system. He gave up four runs in the first inning but nothing more in a four-inning stint. After a rough year with Colorado in 2024, Hudson — 40-32, 4.21, in his big league career — has a 4.50 ERA in four games for the Bees. … Ryan Rolison, a first-round pick out of Ole Miss back in 2018, threw 1 2/3 innings in relief for Albuquerque and trimmed his ERA to 1.32 in eight appearances for the Rockies’ Triple-A club. Now 27, he has yet to get the big league call. … Hurston Waldrep, the Southern Miss alum and a first-round pick by Atlanta in 2023, was slated to pitch Thursday for Triple-A Gwinnett but was pushed back to today. He is 2-0 with a 6.62 ERA in four starts as he aims to return to The Show. P.S. Ex-MSU star Jake Mangum, red-hot rookie with Tampa Bay (see previous post), was placed on the 10-day injured list with a groin strain. … Former Magnolia Heights standout Cooper Pratt, with family in attendance Thursday, received his 2024 MiLB Gold Glove pregame and then hit a big home run for Double-A Biloxi at Keesler Federal Park. Shortstop Pratt, 20, Milwaukee’s No. 3 prospect, is batting .267 with three homers in his Double-A debut. Of note: Pratt’s brother Ozzie is the shortstop for nationally ranked Southern Miss and brother Quincy catches for Magnolia Heights, one of the top-rated prep teams in the state this year.

remember them?

When you think of the many former Mississippi Braves and Biloxi Shuckers currently doing big things in the big leagues, the names Dylan Moore and Trent Grisham probably don’t come quickly to mind. Neither is the brightest of stars. But take a look: Quite a few years after they passed through Mississippi, both are among the most productive hitters on their current teams. Moore, the M-Braves’ regular shortstop in 2017, is batting .316 with five homers and five stolen bases in 19 games for Seattle. Grisham, who played for the Milwaukee-affiliated Shuckers in 2018-19, is hitting .320 with six homers and 13 RBIs over 20 games for the New York Yankees. And both have Gold Gloves on their resume. On Sunday, Moore — who can play any position — started at short and hit leadoff for Seattle, going 2-for-5 with a homer in the 12-10 Mariners’ win against Toronto. Grisham, playing center field, hit leadoff for the 14-8 Yankees and homered in a win against Tampa Bay. Moore, just a .207 hitter in Double-A Mississippi in 2017, played with Grisham in Biloxi for a time in 2018 and made the majors in 2019 with the Mariners. Grisham, a first-round pick by the Brewers in 2015, hit 20 homers over 170 games for the Double-A Shuckers and made his MLB debut with Milwaukee in 2019. He spent four seasons in San Diego and joined the Yankees in 2024.

whatever happened to …

Grae Kessinger, the ex-Ole Miss star, was designated for assignment by Arizona on Saturday while on the injured list at Triple-A Reno. It’s likely that infielder Kessinger, 27, will clear waivers and be able to return to the Reno roster. He was batting .235 in 34 at-bats there. Traded from Houston — where he hit .131 in 49 MLB games over two seasons — to the Diamondbacks after last season, Kessinger was optioned to the minors in spring training.
Ethan Small, a first-round pick out of Mississippi State in 2019, is on the IL at Triple-A Sacramento in the San Francisco system. The lefty, 28, has not pitched this season after making just 14 appearances (because of injury) in 2024. He got into four MLB games with Milwaukee in 2022-23 before being traded to the Giants in February of ’24. He was non-tendered and became a free agent last fall, then re-signed with the Giants.
Logan Tanner, one of the heroes on MSU’s national title team in 2021, is in his second season at High-Class A Dayton in the Cincinnati organization. The catcher from Lucedale, a second-round pick in ’22, is batting .077 in five games this season and .191 with 10 homers for his pro career.
Reed Trimble, the Southern Miss product from Tupelo, is on the IL (again) with Double-A Chesapeake in the Baltimore system. He has played in just one game this season and only 137 in a four-year pro career because of injury issues. A switch-hitting outfielder, he is a .246 career hitter who swiped 29 bases over four levels last season.
Errol Robinson, the Ole Miss product who was coaching with the team last fall, has signed with Hagerstown of the independent Atlantic League, which opens its season this week. Robinson was a preseason All-America pick as a Rebels shortstop in 2016 and was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers that summer. He has bounced around affiliated and indy ball ever since, batting .208 in 46 games in Triple-A with Baltimore in 2024.
P.S. Braden Montgomery, the Madison Central High alum, has proven a quick study in pro ball. A first-round pick last year out of Texas A&M, the switch-hitter is batting .326 at Low-A Kannapolis in the Chicago White Sox chain. He hit his third homer and stole his sixth base on Saturday. In 12 games, he has 17 RBIs and 13 runs. The ChiSox got Montgomery from Boston as part of the Garrett Crochet deal in the off-season. … MSU product Jurrangelo Cijntje, also a first-rounder in 2024, struck out six in 4 1/3 innings in his third start (fifth appearance) for High-A Everett in the Seattle system. Switch-pitcher Cijntje yielded one run — a homer — against Tri-City as he trimmed his ERA to 4.15. He has 19 K’s and 10 walks in 13 innings, working mainly as a right-hander.
