Kemp Alderman, former Ole Miss star and Decatur native, has been named the Double-A Southern League’s player of the week (July 28-Aug. 3). The 2023 Ferriss Trophy winner had nine hits — two of them homers — eight RBIs and three runs for Pensacola in the Miami chain. He hit both homers on Sunday against ex-Mississippi State hurler K.C. Hunt in the Blue Wahoos’ 8-4 win over Biloxi. It’s the second time this season Alderman has won the league’s POW award. He is one of 11 Mississippians to win the top player award in various minor leagues in 2025, joining Connor Hujsak, Konnor Griffin, Blaze Jordan, Tyson Hardin, Jurrangelo Cijntje, Niko Mazza, Braden Montgomery, Rowdey Jordan, Blaine Crim and J.T. Ginn. … Cijntje, the switch-pitcher out of MSU, has been promoted to Double-A Arkansas in the Seattle system. He was 4-7 with a 4.58 ERA in 19 games at the High-Class A level in what is his first pro season. … Atlanta has placed DeSoto Central High product Austin Riley (abdominal injury) back on the 10-day injured list. Former Mississippi Braves infielder Nacho Alvarez was recalled. … Baltimore sent Houston Roth back to Triple-A Norfolk without getting the ex-UM standout into a game. He has a 2.21 ERA, four wins and two saves in 24 relief appearances between Double-A and Triple-A this season. … The Mississippi Mud Monsters, hitting the road Tuesday for a six-game, two-city trip, have revamped their roster in recent days, adding right-hander Braden Forsyth (a Magnolia Heights, Meridian Community College and Ole Miss alum); first baseman Jack Holman; LH Ben Riley Flowers (a Southern Miss product); 7-foot RH Brenton Thiels; and RH Carl Brice (Callaway High alum). RH Heath Mann was signed and then released. The independent club is 35-36, fourth place in the West Division of the Midwest Conference of the Frontier League. The regular season ends Aug. 31. Eight teams qualify for the playoffs, four from each conference, in the 18-team league. … Ole Miss alum Anthony Calarco, who had 10 hits and seven RBIs in last week’s six-game series vs. the Mud Monsters, is batting .335 with a league-best 20 homers and 92 RBIs on the year for Schaumburg, one of the FL’s best teams. He played in Oxford in 2023.

It’s the 3rd of August, another sleepy, dusty, central Mississippi Sunday, and the Mississippi Mud Monsters are hosting the Schaumburg Boomers in a Frontier League doubleheader at Pearl’s Trustmark Park. … At 4:02 p.m., just before first pitch of Game 1, the crowd in the 6,000-plus seat ballpark is, uh, slim — think double digits — and the atmosphere subdued. Very. … The video board in left-center is “under repair” and displays only balls, strikes, outs and a basic linescore. … But there is music. And baseball. … Top of the first, Anthony Calarco, introduced as a former Ole Miss player, comes to the plate. The p.a. “taunts” him with the Mississippi State fight song. He rips an RBI double down the right-field line. There are cheers. … Bottom one, Brayland Skinner leads off with a double and comes in on a Travis Holt knock. … Kids behind the right-field fence can be heard razzing the Boomers right fielder. … Top second, Skinner, the Mud Monsters’ offensive catalyst, suffers an apparent leg injury tracking a fly ball. He limps off the field. … Third inning, Calarco, a hefty lefty hitter, rips another RBI hit. More cheers for the visitor. Boomers lead 2-1. … The “Chicken Dance” rings out on the p.a. after the third inning. It does little to inspire the scattered crowd. … Bottom four, the Mud-sters get two hits. But Boomers center fielder Banks Tolley — the St. Andrew’s grad — unleashes a laser to cut down Nilo Rijo at the plate. The sensational double play ends the inning. … Bottom five, the Boomers left fielder, Aaron Simmons, cuts down a runner at the plate to end that inning. Amazing. … Calarco is up in the sixth for his third at-bat. Cue the fight song. He crushes a line drive to left that clanks off Samil De La Rosa’s glove. Two batters later, Nick Podkul’s single up the middle makes it 3-1. … Bottom six, Jack Holman, recent addition to the Mississippi roster, smashes a double to the wall in center that Tolley almost reels in. A run scores, and it’s now 3-2 Schaumburg. … Some Mud-sters fans on the third-base side can be heard playfully mocking — “Rookie of the Year”-style — the anatomy of the Boomers pitcher, who has yielded only two runs. … Seventh inning: Chris Barraza replaces starter Brian Williams on the bump for Mississippi. Barraza walks four batters around a two-run hit by that man again, Calarco. … Following a much-needed visit from pitching coach Robert Carson, the former Hattiesburg High star and onetime big leaguer, Barraza fans two to end the inning. … The Mud-sters trail 5-2 going to the bottom of the final frame. … Hits by De La Rosa and Holt are squandered. A bouncer to the mound ends it. As the visitors quietly celebrate in the infield, the p.a. invites fans — who have grown in number, slightly — to have a catch on the field and stick around for Game 2. P.S. Mississippi pounds out 15 hits and rolls to a 12-6 win in the second game, the fourth game in two days between the teams. The announced attendance is 1,616.

The St. Louis Cardinals, in the process of trading away big league pitchers, have added a couple of Mississippi products to their farm system. Former DeSoto Central High star Blaze Jordan was acquired from Boston as part of a deal for Steven Matz and ex-Mississippi State standout Nate Dohm was picked up from the New York Mets in the Ryan Helsley trade. Corner infielder Jordan, Boston’s No. 17 prospect (MLB Pipeline), is batting .308 with 12 homers and 62 RBIs between Double-A and Triple-A. Dohm, a hard-throwing right-hander drafted in the third round in 2024, is 3-5 with a 2.87 ERA as a starter in A-ball. He was the Mets’ No. 14 prospect. … Also on the move on Wednesday was veteran third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes, traded from Pittsburgh to Cincinnati. Hayes is the son of Hattiesburg native and ex-big leaguer Charlie Hayes. The trade deadline is today at 5 p.m. CDT. … Mississippi college products Brent Rooker (23), Matt Wallner (13) and Jordan Westburg (12) all went deep in MLB games on Wednesday, and in his first game on a rehab assignment in Triple-A, Tim Elko hit his 17th minor league bomb. He has four big league homers. … Cool Moment, Take 2: Former Jackson Prep teammates Jake Mangum and Will Warren faced off for the second time this season in the Tampa Bay-New York Yankees game. Warren struck out Mangum in Wednesday’s first confrontation, then Mangum got an infield hit in the second. Mangum also got an infield hit off Warren back in April. Warren (4.64 ERA) allowed one run is six innings but got a no-decision in a game the Yankees won in extra innings. Mangum (.288) was 1-for-5 with a highlight-reel catch. … MSU product Konnor Pilkington from Pascagoula has thrown six scoreless innings with seven strikeouts since Washington called him up on July 22. … At Trustmark Park in Pearl, former St. Andrew’s standout Banks Tolley homered for visiting Schaumburg, but Brayland Skinner and Kasten Furr combined for nine RBIs as the Mississippi Mud Monsters took a 14-9 victory in the Frontier League contest.

Former Madison Central High standout Braden Montgomery has been promoted to Double-A Birmingham in the Chicago White Sox’s system. The 12th overall pick last year (out of Texas A&M by Boston), the 22-year-old Montgomery, a switch-hitting outfielder, hit .269 with 11 homers, 57 RBIs, 50 runs and 11 stolen bases over two levels of A-ball. He is the ChiSox’s No. 2 prospect and No. 26 overall in the minors, per MLB Pipeline. … Michael Fowler, a Southern Miss product, has signed with the Milwaukee Brewers, the independent Mississippi Mud Monsters announced. Fowler, who only recently joined the Mud-sters’ roster, went 2-1 with a 1.92 ERA in seven games, striking out 15 in 9 1/3 innings. This is his first pro season. … Will Verdung, the MACCC’s player of the year for 2023 at Itawamba Community College, has been placed on the injured list at High-Class A Rome by the Atlanta Braves. The third baseman is batting .279 with no homers and 22 RBIs. Verdung mashed 25 homers in two years at ICC and went deep in his first pro at-bat in 2023 but has hit just two homers since. … Oak Grove outfielder Eric Booth Jr., Magnolia Heights infielder Cole Prosek and Jackson Prep outfielder Kevin Roberts Jr. have advanced to Phase 2 of USA Baseball’s U18 National Team Training Camp in Cary, N.C. There will be a second cut to 20 players, who will compete in the U-18 Baseball World Cup in Okinawa, Japan. … Nick Fortes, just acquired by Tampa Bay from Miami, is in the Rays’ lineup at catcher for tonight’s game at Yankee Stadium, facing New York ace Max Fried.

It wouldn’t be a total shock to see Brent Rooker win tonight’s Home Run Derby. Ex-Misssisippi State standout Rooker certainly has power. He’s got 20 homers this season, 89 over the last two-plus seasons with the A’s and 99 (in 461 games) in his MLB career. He has 102 minor league homers (in 402 games) on his resume and hit 36 at MSU, 23 in 2017 when he won the SEC Triple Crown. The 6-foot-3, 225-pound right-handed batter has big power: 11 of his 20 homers this year are 400-foot clouts, and he has a career-best of 463. And he enters the competition at Atlanta’s Truist Park on a bit of power trip with four bombs in his last 14 games. Rooker will be the first Mississippian (native or school alum) to participate in the All-Star Game’s Derby since Brian Dozier in 2014. Dave Parker won the first such event in 1985 and also took part in ’86. Ellis Burks was in the 1996 Derby, and Rafael Palmeiro competed in two: 1998 and 2004. Rooker’s competition tonight includes Seattle slugger Cal Raleigh, the betting favorite, plus fan favorite Matt Olson of the Braves, Byron Buxton, Oneil Cruz, James Wood, Junior Caminero and Jazz Chisholm. (You can get some good odds on Rooker, if you’re so inclined.) The event begins at 7 p.m. on ESPN. P.S. The Mississippi Mud Monsters won again at Trustmark Park on Sunday night, their eighth win in 10 games, and enter the Frontier League All-Star break with a 30-27 record. All-Star Travis Holt hit his ninth homer and enters the break at .300 with 39 RBIs. Brandon Mitchell (4-3) went six innings for the victory. The FL All-Star Game is Wednesday in Troy, N.Y. … Tyler Pitzer, a portal transfer into Mississippi State, has been named to the Cape Cod League All-Star Game on July 19. Right-hander Pitzer, pitching for Yarmouth-Dennis, leads the CCBL in ERA with an 0.57 over 15 2/3 innings with 21 strikeouts. He pitched the last two years at South Carolina.

seizing the spotlight

On a Detroit team with four 2025 All-Stars, Colt Keith typically plays a supporting role. On Monday, the former Biloxi High star took center stage, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and a long home run in the Tigers’ 5-1 win over Tampa Bay at Comerica Park. Actually, no player for the runaway Tigers is on a hotter streak than Keith, batting .435 (10-for-23) over his last seven games. He is batting .321 over his last 15 games with three homers, seven RBIs and 11 runs, mostly out of the leadoff spot. Keith credits a change in his approach for this surge. “Lately, I’ve been swinging, like, 75 percent and just trying to be short to the ball,” he told the Detroit Free Press. The second-year big leaguer, 23, who got a big contract before his rookie season, started slowly this year, batting .181 with a lone homer and five RBIs through April. He is currently at .264 with seven homers, 27 RBIs and 40 runs in 80 games. After playing second base in 2024 — a new position for the lefty hitter — he has bounced between second, first, third and DH this season. Mississippi’s Gatorade player of the year in 2019, Keith was drafted in the fifth — and final — round in 2020 and proved a quick study in the minors, batting .300 over his three seasons. P.S. Washington named bench coach Miguel Cairo as its interim manager after firing Dave Martinez on Sunday. Nationals pitching coach Jim Hickey, who filled that role for the Double-A Jackson Generals some 30 years ago, will stay on, for now. … Mississippi Mud Monsters Brian Williams, Victor Diaz and Travis Holt have been chosen for the Frontier League All-Star Game, set for next Wednesday at Troy, N.Y. The independent Mud-sters resume their homestand tonight against Windy City at Trustmark Park.

four for the 4th

Four Mississippians in the majors made notable contributions to winning efforts on July 4, always a star-spangled day in baseball. Jordan Westburg provided plenty of fireworks for Baltimore, going 3-for-4 with a homer — his eighth — in the Orioles’ 3-2 win at Atlanta. Mississippi State alum Westburg was back in the lineup at third base for the first time since June 27 because of a nagging injury. (Ex-Braves star Charlie Morton got the win for the O’s, his fifth of the season and the 143rd of his MLB career; he is the all-time leader in wins among former Mississippi Braves hurlers, of which there are many who’ve made The Show.) … Ex-MSU star Brent Rooker, a potential All-Star pick, went 2-for-4 with two RBIs as the A’s routed San Francisco 11-2. Rooker is batting .273 with 18 homers and 48 RBIs. … Matt Wallner, former Southern Miss standout, went 1-for-3 with a walk in Minnesota’s 4-3 win against surging Tampa Bay. The Twins (42-46 overall) are 23-17 at Target Field. Wallner is batting just .201 but 19 of his 31 hits have been for extra bases, including eight home runs. … Colt Keith, the Biloxi High product, went 1-for-4 batting leadoff as Detroit beat Cleveland 2-1. Keith is hitting .258 (.338 OBP) for the Tigers, the best team in MLB at 53-34. P.S. Mississippi State’s Ace Reese — who made several All-America teams this year — and Ryan McPherson made the 26-man roster for the Collegiate National Team that will play a team from Japan in a series starting July 8. Reese hit .267 in the Stars vs. Stripes Series and McPherson posted a 0.00 ERA in two appearances. Jackson State coach Omar Johnson is on the Team USA coaching staff. … The Biloxi Shuckers drew an announced crowd of 6,098 Friday night at Keesler Federal Park, and the Southern League South first-half champs beat Pensacola 10-4. Former Magnolia Heights star Cooper Pratt went 1-for-3 with two walks and a run for the Double-A Shuckers. … The independent Mississippi Mud Monsters drew an announced crowd of 5,230 for their Friday night game against Washington at Pearl’s Trustmark Park, and the home boys rewarded the fans with a 2-1 victory, their fourth in a row in the Frontier League. Kasten Furr drove in both runs in the seventh inning.

The Mud Monsters aren’t the only ones coming home to Mississippi today. Tyreque Reed, a Magnolia State native, is on the roster of the Washington Wild Things, who are visiting Trustmark Park this weekend for a Frontier League series. Reed, 28, who starred at Houlka High and Itawamba Community College before launching his pro career, is the Wild Things’ cleanup batter and certainly a hitter to keep an eye on this weekend. He won the FL batting title last year with a .341 average for a Washington club that posted the indy league’s best record. Currently, Reed is hitting .240 with 10 homers and 46 RBIs. In 2017 at ICC, the right-handed hitting Reed batted a ridiculous .504 with 15 homers and 15 doubles. He played in both the Texas and Boston systems in affiliated ball, batting .268 with 64 homers in 374 games and reaching the Double-A level with the Red Sox in 2021. He missed much of the ’22 and ’23 seasons with injuries. (Of note: Madison Central High alum Regi Grace began this season with Washington but is now pitching in Mexico.) Washington is 26-22, first in the FL’s Midwest Conference Central Division. The Mud Monsters, fourth in the Midwest West, are 23-25 but coming in hot, having won three straight at Evansville. Kyle Booker, a DeSoto Central product, went 3-for-5 with two RBIs in Thursday’s win and is batting .303. Travis Holt leads the club in homers and RBIs with seven and 29. P.S. Former Meridian CC standout Cliff Lee was in the news on Thursday. Zack Wheeler, named the National League’s pitcher of the month for June, became the first Philadelphia Phillies pitcher since Lee to win two monthly awards. Wheeler also won in May of 2022. Lee, one of the most underrated pitchers of recent times, won twice in 2011, going 5-0 with a sub-0.50 ERA in both June and August. The left-hander, a four-time All-Star, also won two POMs with Cleveland in 2008, when he won the Cy Young Award, and another with Seattle in 2010. He went 143-91 with a 3.52 ERA for his career. … Ex-Ole Miss star Doug Nikhazy was recalled (again) from Triple-A by Cleveland on Thursday but did not pitch. His only MLB appearance to date was his rocky debut on April 26. … Mel Rojas Jr., who played for the Mississippi Braves in 2016, has set the Korean Baseball Organization career record for homers by a foreign player. He hit No. 175 on Thursday for the KT Wiz.

After a long road trip that lasted two weeks and rambled through four Midwest towns, the Mississippi Mud Monsters return to the sultry South for a six-game homestand that begins Tuesday at Pearl’s Trustmark Park. The independent Frontier League club, now 18-21 on the season, went 5-7 on the trip but did finish on a high note, beating Gateway 8-7 on Sunday. Nick Hassan hit his first homer of the season and drove in four runs as part of Mississippi’s 17-hit attack. Brayland Skinner continued to fuel the offense, going 3-for-6 from the leadoff spot. Luis Devers went seven innings for the win. Skinner, former Mississippi State standout, is hitting .300 with a team-leading 28 runs and a league-best 25 steals. Kyle Booker, a DeSoto Central High product, is batting .314 with three homers, 19 RBIs and 14 bags. Travis Holt (.268) leads in homers and RBIs with six and 22. Tyree Thompson (4-0, 2.84), Brian Williams (2-2, 2.97) and Devers (4-3, 5.21) have been effective starters for manager Jay Pecci’s club. Chris Barraza, who got the save Sunday, has three and a 0.50 ERA in 13 games. Sergio Sanchez has five saves despite a 7.07 ERA. The Mud-sters, fourth in the Midwest Conference South, will face a Down East team that is 14-23 and fourth in the Atlantic Conference East. The Bird Dawgs are managed by Brett Wellman, whose dad, Phillip, managed the Mississippi Braves to a Southern League pennant back in 2008. Brett served as a bullpen catcher at times during his father’s four seasons in Pearl. … Former Mud-sters lefty Zack Morris has made two appearances (2.25 ERA) for Colorado’s rookie-level team since being signed by the Rockies on June 13. P.S. Congratulations to Conner Ware, Germantown High and Pearl River Community College product and a member of LSU’s national title team. Ware, a junior, did not pitch in the College World Series. (Of note: Former Taylorsville High pitcher Aiden Moffett was on the LSU roster when the Tigers won the 2023 CWS crown; he was at Texas this season.)

Flushing a night of frustration, Austin Riley hit a walk-off 10th-inning sacrifice fly Tuesday that gave Atlanta a 5-4 win over the visiting New York Mets. “Hopefully it’s some momentum to carry the rest of the series,” the DeSoto Central High product said in a postgame interview. The Braves are a wobbly 32-39 with two games left in the series against the Mets, who lead the National League East at 45-28. Riley, an All-Star candidate who has had his struggles both at the plate and in the field, was 0-for-4 with a strikeout when he came up in the 10th with the bases loaded and one out. He had popped up in a similar situation in the eighth when the Braves trailed 4-1. This time — with the score knotted thanks to Marcell Ozuna’s three-run double in the eighth — he drove a fastball to the warning track in center field, scoring the game-winner. It was the fourth walk-off RBI in Riley’s career, including one in the 2021 National League Championship Series. He is batting .277 with 11 homers and 37 RBIs this season. … Jordan Westburg, the ex-Mississippi State star, went 3-for-5 with two runs in Baltimore’s 5-1 win against Tampa Bay. Westburg is batting .385 with three homers and eight RBIs in seven games since coming off the injured list. The Orioles (31-41) are 5-2 in those games. … Will Warren, the former Jackson Prep standout, struck out a career-high 11 batters in six innings but took a loss as the New York Yankees were shut out — again! — by the Los Angeles Angels 4-0 at Yankee Stadium. Warren, who gave up three early runs, is 4-4 with a 4.83 ERA. … MSU alum Nathaniel Lowe hit his 10th homer for Washington, but Colorado blasted seven bombs — seven! — all told in a 10-6 win that sent the Nationals to their 10th straight loss. … Zack Morris, who demonstrated punch-out stuff with the Mississippi Mud Monsters, has signed with the Colorado Rockies and been assigned to the rookie-level Arizona Complex League team. Left-hander Morris, 24, a former Arkansas and TCU star, posted a 3.86 ERA over 16 1/3 innings for the independent Mud Monsters with 29 strikeouts and just three walks. “This is exactly the kind of moment we coach for,” Mud-sters manager Jay Pecci said in a team release. “Zack came in, did the work, and got better every time out.” Morris had a 5.48 ERA over five college seasons and pitched in the indy Frontier League last year with New Jersey. … Jackson State will be well-represented in the HBCU Swingman Classic, with six Tigers bound for Atlanta’s Truist Park on July 11. Robert Tate Jr., Jordan McCladdie, Joseph Eichelberger, Eric Elliott, Nkosi Didder and Erick Gonzalez are among the 50 HBCU players chosen for the third annual all-star game. Jaylon Burrell of Alcorn State and Kade Wood of Mississippi Valley State also have been invited, along with Chenar Brown, who played two years at JSU before transferring. Former Alcorn star Corey Wimberly is one of the coaches for the game. … Jackson State’s Omar Johnson is on the coaching staff for the Collegiate National Team’s training camp at Cary, N.C., USA Baseball has announced. The staff will be split into two units for the Stars vs. Stripes series, set for June 29-July 3 at sites in North Carolina. The roster of players has yet to be announced.
