ode to jucos

In the display case honoring Scott Berry at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum, there is a green jersey emblazoned with EAGLES. It’s a nod to Meridian Community College and, by extension, to juco baseball in the state, which doesn’t seem to get the attention it deserves. Berry, who’ll be formally inducted into the state’s Hall of Fame on Saturday, is best known as the former coach at Southern Miss, where he is the all-time leader in victories, including numerous championships. But Berry also spent 10 years as a coach at MCC, the last four as head coach after succeeding the highly successful Corky Palmer. Berry’s legacy at MCC is powerful: Over his four seasons, the Eagles were a perennial Top 10 team in the NJCAA, per the MCC website. His teams went 185-58, twice reaching the Juco World Series. The 1997 team, his first, was ranked No. 1 all season before falling in the district round of the postseason. He won numerous coach of the year awards, including two national honors, and he was inducted into the MACCC Sports Hall of Fame in 2014. More than 25 players advanced from Meridian CC to Division I schools during Berry’s tenure. Among that group was Cliff Lee, who went on to Arkansas and then to the big leagues, where he was an All-Star and Cy Young Award winner. All told, MCC has produced seven MLB players, including Corey Dickerson, Tyler Moore and Jamie Brown. There’s an impressive list of state juco alums from other programs who’ve made it to the big leagues: Roy Oswalt (a recent Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame inductee), Jarrod Dyson, Matt Lawton, Tim Anderson, Marcus Thames, Greg Hibbard, Bill Selby, Fred Lewis and Wendell Magee. Among the decorated coaches in addition to Berry and Palmer who’ve served in the state juco ranks are Ken and Cooper Farris, Rick Clarke, George McQuitter, Donny Castle, Keith Case, Sam Temple, Chris Kirtland, Rick Collier, Neal Holliman and Marc Carson. Kirtland won a national title at Jones, and current Pearl River coach Michael Avalon won the national crown in 2022. Current USM coach Christian Ostrander previously coached at Jones. Every season, and throughout each season, several state jucos will appear in the NJCAA Division II national rankings. That green EAGLES jersey in the museum display case serves as a subtle reminder of the quality and rich history of juco ball in Mississippi.

juco stars come out

Individual honors continue to roll in for Pearl River Community College’s 2025 team, which finished as national runner-up this season in NJCAA Division II. Five Wildcats were named to the NJCAA All-America teams, including first-team pick K.K. Clark. Jacob Keys and Caston Thompson made second-team A-A, Topher Jones the third team and Jacob Johnson honorable mention. Itawamba CC’s Jud Files and East Central’s Pablo Roque made the third team. Clark, a Brandon High product, went 12-2 with a 1.84 ERA in his lone season with PRCC after transferring from Mississippi State. He was previously named the MACCC’s pitcher of the year and the outstanding pitcher in the juco World Series. Clark is bound for Louisiana Tech, where he’ll play for Mississippian Lane Burroughs. All told, PRCC has seen 16 players from the ’25 squad sign with four-year schools. Pearl River’s Michael Avalon was the MACCC coach of the year after guiding the Wildcats to a 53-10 record with state and Region 23 titles. … A number of MACCC players finished among the national leaders in various statistical categories. PRCC’s Clark and Johnson, both 12-game winners, tied for second in the nation in that category, and Clark ranked fourth in strikeouts with 116. Jones College’s Caden Freeman and Copiah-Lincoln’s Nash Sturdivant tied for the D-II lead in saves with nine each. Jake Meilstrup of Southwest was third in the nation in steals with a school-record 56. (The previous record was held by Maleke Fowler — not, surprisingly enough, by former MLB star Jarrod Dyson.) PRCC’s Jones led the state with 72 RBIs, a figure that ranked 10th nationally, and teammate Keegan Giger, a .349 hitter, topped the state with 82 hits, tied for 16th in the national stats. Holmes’ Hunter Azemar led the state in home runs with 15, tied for 17th-most in the nation. PRCC’s Thompson, the MACCC player of the year and a Nicholls State signee, and Jackson Hood tied for 14th in homers with 14. The MACCC’s leading hitter was Hinds’ Dawson Muenzenmay, who batted .400, with Meridian’s Brennon Wright at .381. The national ranking of batting average leaders is not available.

Putting a bow on the state’s high school season — which ended with the MHSAA championships in Pearl last week — MaxPreps ranks Magnolia Heights, the MAIS Class 5A champion, as Mississippi’s No. 1 team. The Senatobia-based Chiefs, who had some big wins over out-of-state schools, are No. 22 in MaxPreps’ latest national poll. Madison Central, which beat Brandon in three games for the MHSAA Class 7A championship, is ranked No. 2 in the state, followed by Purvis, West Lauderdale, East Union, Saltillo, Lafayette, Oak Grove, Brandon and Hartfield Academy. West Lauderdale beat Purvis in the MHSAA 4A title series, but Purvis has what many consider the state’s best player: shortstop JoJo Parker. East Union, featuring highly touted pitcher Landon Harmon, was the MHSAA 2A champ. Saltillo won in 6A, Lafayette in 5A. (Seminary won the 3A title and West Union 1A.) Oak Grove lost in the 7A South finals to Brandon, while Hartfield Academy was MAIS 6A runner-up to Presbyterian Christian. … Many of the state’s best players are gathering in Hattiesburg this week for the Crossroads Diamond Club D.M. Howie All-Star Games. The 6A/7A game was slated for Tuesday, the 4A/5A game for tonight and the 1A/2A/3A game for Thursday, all at William Carey University’s Wheeler Field. This is the 50th edition of the event. … The state’s Gatorade player of the year will be announced (by Gatorade’s select committee) next month, and it’ll be quite interesting to see who follows Konnor Griffin as the winner of this prestigious award. If pro prospect status holds any sway, Purvis’ Parker (ranked 14th in MLB Pipeline’s latest draft chart), East Union’s Harmon (No. 47) and Lewisburg’s Talon Haley (No. 84) would be considered top candidates. JoJo Parker’s brother Jacob — they shared the state’s 4A Mr. Baseball title — Oak Grove’s Maddox Miller, Sumrall’s Leo Odom, Petal’s Tanner Beliveau, Hartfield’s J.P. Abt and Magnolia Heights’ Cole Prosek are others worthy of mention. The Gatorade committee considers both on-field and off-field accomplishments. The last seven winners were Jackson Prep’s Griffin (also the national player of the year), Cooper Pratt, Dakota Jordan, Braden Montgomery, Blaze Jordan, Colt Keith and J.T. Ginn. All are currently in pro ball, with Keith and Ginn on MLB rosters. P.S. Update from Enid: Pearl River Community College rallied from an early deficit to beat East Central CC 7-6 on a walk-off double in the ninth inning by Topher Jones. Second-seeded Pearl River, 2-0 in the NJCAA Division II College World Series, advances to the bracket final. Six-seed East Central, 2-1 in Enid, plays Southeastern Iowa tonight in an elimination game, with the winner taking on PRCC Thursday for a berth in the World Series finals. No. 1 seed Pasco-Hernando State (Fla.) is 2-0 in the other bracket.

After a day of rest, Pearl River Community College and East Central CC will get back on the field for the sixth installment of their compelling 2025 rivalry. They meet tonight in a winners bracket game at Enid, Okla., in the NJCAA Division II World Series. Both have been ranked No. 1 at one point this year. When last they tangled, PRCC won 10-0 in the deciding Game 3 of the Region 23 title series, played at Poplarville earlier this month. The Wildcats outscored the Warriors 36-7 in that series, something that no doubt gnaws at the ECCC players. The teams split their MACCC regular season doubleheader, played in March in Decatur. Pearl River, seeded second in the World Series, is 51-8, coming off an 11-3 win against Kellogg (Mich.) on Sunday. Jackson Hood keyed a pivotal five-run fifth inning with a home run, and K.K. Clark posted his 11th win. Jacob Johnson, 12-game winner who beat ECCC in the Region 23 clincher, should be available tonight. East Central, 45-14 and the 6-seed, has won two games in Enid, including a wonky 10-9 victory vs. South Mountain (Ariz.) on Sunday. The Warriors squandered a 6-0 lead but got a big bomb from Brady McAbee, a clutch go-ahead knock in the ninth from Eli Smith and a 1-2-3 final inning from closer Andrew Nielsen to emerge a winner. It was their second one-run win in Enid. ECCC has used seven pitchers, with Nielsen closing in both contests. The winner of tonight’s game will be in the driver’s seat to make the WS finals.

It’s championship Sunday, and look who’s here. Though nothing can be taken for granted in tournament play, it’s no surprise, really, that Southern Miss has reached the Sun Belt Conference title game. The Golden Eagles, two-time defending champs, came in as the No. 2 seed with a 15-game win streak. They’ll meet Coastal Carolina, the top seed, today (1 p.m.) in Montgomery, Ala. In Hoover, Ala., Ole Miss is something of an interloper in the SEC championship match. The Rebels came in as the seventh seed (16-14 in the league) and were a little wobbly down the stretch of the regular season, going 14-11 after a hot start that had lifted them into the national top 10. They’ll play 4-seed Vanderbilt today (noon). Ole Miss (40-18), the 2022 national champ, last won the SEC tourney in 2018, its third crown. To get to this final, the Rebels beat Florida, Arkansas and No. 1-ranked LSU, 2-0 on Saturday. The Rebels won two of three from Vanderbilt in Oxford this season. Vandy (41-16) won the SEC Tournament in 2023, its fourth league title. The Commodores, typically loaded with MLB-caliber arms, have won two national titles. A pick to click for UM: Will Furniss. He hit a big homer against LSU, his 10th of the year, and is batting .288 with 40 RBIs. For Vandy, it’s freshman Brodie Johnston, who has 12 homers, 51 RBIs, 14 doubles and a .502 slugging average. In the Sun Belt finale, USM (44-13, 18 straight wins) gets a Coastal Carolina club that is also sizzling hot. The Chanticleers are 47-11 with 17 straight wins. The teams did not meet in the SBC regular season; USM leads the all-time series 5-2. A key player for USM figures to be Jake Cook, former Madison Central High star who is hitting .357 with 54 runs and 30 RBIs. For Coastal, which won the national title in 2016, the pick to click is Sebastian Alexander, a .302 hitter with nine homers and 25 steals. P.S. Belhaven ran into a buzzsaw in its NCAA Division III super regional. The Blazers, finishing 34-15, were blasted two straight, 17-3 Friday and 14-1 Saturday, at No. 2-ranked Denison (Ohio). … East Central Community College, behind the pitching of Chris Bilingsley and the power of Jayden Adcox, won its NJCAA Division II World Series opener 6-5 Saturday against Catawba Valley. Pearl River CC, which had a first-round bye in Enid, Okla., plays its opener today against Kellogg (Mich.).

Focus today on Ellisville and Community Bank Park, where Jones College will host Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in a big — yes, they’re all big — conference doubleheader. The big move in the NJCAA Division II poll this week was made by Jones (27-8, 13-3 MACCC), which jumped from No. 8 to No. 5 after running its win streak to eight games. Pearl River Community College (33-5) remains No. 2 in the national poll and atop the MACCC standings at 13-1. East Central is ranked third (up from fourth) at 31-7 and is 13-3 in the league. Jones is 13-1 at home, its only loss there to Itawamba in mid-March. The individual spotlight at JC belongs to Chase Russell, an All-Stater from Madison Central High who leads the state in hitting at .417 with four homers — including a walk-off grand slam last week — and 24 RBIs. T.J. Dunsford is second in the league in batting at .397, and Braden Smith, out of Brandon, has nine homers and 36 RBIs. Russell, originally a Southern Miss signee, also leads Jones pitchers with a 3.96 ERA and has a 3-1 record. Josh Lee (Gulfport) is 5-0, 4.05. Jones is coached by former Mississippi State catcher Wes Thigpen, who came over from Gulf Coast four years ago. Gulf Coast, under new coach Zach Allen, comes to Ellisville with a 27-13 mark, 9-5 in the league. … Pearl River’s K.K. Clark, from Brandon via MSU, was named MACCC pitcher of the week after tossing a five-inning no-hitter at Meridian. Hitter of the week is East Central’s Briceton Johnson, a freshman from Maben who hit .615 with a grand slam and a three-run homer in four games.

a rare feat

In the course of putting up video game numbers on Friday, Pearl River Community College pulled off an exceedingly rare feat. The Wildcats, the No. 2-ranked team NJCAA Division II, scored in every inning — 12 of them — in a 24-6 and 20-0 sweep of Itawamba CC at Fulton. “We capitalized on runners in scoring position,” PRCC coach Michael Avalon said in a school release. “We were disciplined with the strike zone. … Today, we cashed in throughout the day.” They scored 44 runs on 27 hits. They had a seven-run inning in Game 1 and five- and six-run frames in Game 2. Freshman Topher Jones drove in 11 runs on the day, including a (likely) school record eight in the opener, when he hit two homers. The Hernando High product, a midyear transfer from Mississippi State, is batting .320 with four homers and 42 RBIs. Caston Thompson had four RBIs in Game 1, and Jackson Hood chipped in three in Game 2. Jacob Johnson got the win in the second game, a five-inning contest, to improve to 8-1. The Wildcats are 33-5 and 13-1 in the MACCC. ICC is 19-17 and 6-10. … East Central (31-7, 13-3, nine straight wins) and Jones College (27-8, 13-3, eight straight wins), both nationally ranked, stayed on heels of The River with conference sweeps of their own on Friday. P.S. In a matchup of teams with 1-8 SEC records, Mississippi State fell to South Carolina 7-3 Friday night at Starkville’s Dudy Noble Field. MSU, nationally ranked in preseason, is now 17-13 overall. The SEC is a tough league. Since winning the national title under Chris Lemonis in 2021, the Bulldogs are 36-64 in conference games, 110-92 overall. At 1-9 this year, MSU is tied with Florida and Texas A&M for 13th in the 16-team league. Missouri is last at 0-9.

Heading into play today, No. 2-ranked Pearl River Community College still leads the MACCC standings at 7-1 after a sweep of Hinds CC on Wednesday. PRCC’s Jacob Johnson (6-1) leads the league in ERA with a 1.26, and Carson Fair is tops in saves with six. … The league’s most dominant pitcher to date has been Jud Files of Itawamba. He is 7-1, tied for the MACCC lead in wins, with a 2.76 ERA and a league-best 73 strikeouts in 45 2/3 innings. Files, a freshman, is a 6-foot-2 right-hander from Mooreville who originally signed with Mississippi State before transferring. ICC visits Copiah-Lincoln today for a twinbill which might pit Files against the Wolves’ Jennings Kimbrell, also 7-1 with a 2.54. Files’ teammate Evan McCarthy leads the conference in hitting with a .410 average for the Indians (18-12, 5-5). Co-Lin’s Tucker Jones has 24 steals, a league-high. … Resurgent Gulf Coast, 24-10 and 6-2 under first-year coach Zach Allen, features the league home run leader in Dom Jackson, who has 10. The Bulldogs host No. 23 Northeast (7-3 in the league, tied for third) today. … Barret Rodgers of fourth-ranked East Central (25-7, 7-3) tops the loop in RBIs with 35; he is batting .392 with seven homers. … Sixth-ranked Jones College is also 7-3 in the MACCC, and Meridian sits sixth at 6-4. P.S. Kudos to Ole Miss’ Hunter Elliott, who is tied for the SEC lead in wins after beating Florida 7-5 on Thursday night. The lefty from Tupelo, coming back from two seasons lost to injury, went 5 2/3 innings against the Gators, allowing three runs on a home run in the third inning. “One of the reasons he’s so good, he gets better … he answers the bell,” Ole Miss coach Mike Bianco said in a postgame interview. Elliott hung up zeroes in the fourth and fifth and got the first two outs in the sixth while the Rebels (20-5, 5-2 SEC) were surging ahead for their fifth straight win. Elliott, 5-0 in seven starts, has a 3.12 ERA and 47 strikeouts — seven on Thursday — in 34 2/3 innings. … UM alum Drew Pomeranz, the veteran left-hander, has re-signed with Seattle on a minor league deal. He hasn’t pitched in the majors in four years.

Pearl River Community College lost its grip on the No. 1 ranking in the NJCAA Division II poll after going 3-1 last week. Now ranked No. 2, PRCC (25-5, 5-1 MACCC) split a twinbill against then-No. 4 East Central CC and blasted then-No. 24 Holmes two times. The Wildcats have 11 wins against ranked teams, per the school website. Caston Thompson, a Brookhaven Academy product, leads PRCC hitters at .390 with six homers, 24 RBIs and 30 runs. Jacob Johnson, out of Pearl River Central High, threw five shutout innings at Holmes and is 6-1 with a 1.26 ERA. … ECCC (23-7, 5-3), ranked No. 1 two weeks ago, remained fourth in the national poll after a 2-2 week. Jones (19-8, 5-3) is 10th after losing two heartbreakers to Northeast on Saturday. Northeast (19-13, 6-2), freshly ranked No. 23, won 7-6 on a walk-off HBP and 2-1 on a walk-off knock by Kody Gilmore. Northeast’s stars included Layth Holliday, who drove in four runs in Game 1, and Dean McCallum, who tossed a five-hitter in Game 2. Also at 6-2 in the league is unranked Meridian (19-11), which got one of the best performances of the season by Brennon Wright, a Starkville High alum who hit for the cycle and stole two bases in a 29-9 victory Saturday against Delta. MCC ran out of ammo in Game 2 and lost 6-3. The big game upcoming is Jones hosting Meridian on Wednesday. P.S. After a show of power that swept away Missouri over the weekend, Ole Miss moved up to No. 15 (from 19) in Baseball America’s new poll. Isaac Humphrey, a Louisville transfer, belted four homers and drove in 13 runs in that series for the Rebels, now 18-5, 4-2 SEC. They’ll face No. 19 Florida in Oxford next weekend. The top five teams — and 11 of the top 19 — in the BA poll are SEC schools. No. 5 LSU hosts scuffling Mississippi State (15-9, 1-5) next weekend. Southern Miss, which beat Ole Miss last week in Pearl and swept Louisiana-Monroe on the road over the weekend, is No. 23 in the BA poll. The Golden Eagles are 18-6, 5-1 Sun Belt. … It’s been a rough start to the SWAC season for the Mississippi schools. Alcorn State is 0-6, Mississippi Valley State 0-5 and Jackson State 2-4. Senior Erick Gonzalez, one of JSU’s best arms, got shelled on Sunday, surrendering 10 runs in three innings in a rubber-game loss to Bethune-Cookman at Braddy Field. Valley (4-9 overall), for whatever reason, has had 13 games cancelled this season. … The top five in the new MaxPreps Mississippi poll has Magnolia Heights and Lewisburg at 1-2 again, followed by Madison Central, Hartfield Academy and Ocean Springs. Purvis, Jackson Academy and Southeast Lauderdale slipped to the second five.

The No. 1 vs. No. 4 showdown Tuesday in the state junior college ranks resulted in a split between top-ranked Pearl River Community College and East Central CC. That opened the door for Jones College, ranked sixth in NJCAA Division II, and unranked Meridian to jump to the top in the MACCC, both with 5-1 records. (Yes, the musical chairs in the state standings and the national poll will continue into next week.) PRCC, 23-5 overall, is now 3-1 in the league and ECCC (22-6) is 4-2. In their twinbill at Decatur, ECCC won the opener 10-0 and PRCC roared back to take the nightcap 11-1, boosted by a Nico Williams grand slam. Meanwhile, surging Jones (19-6) swept struggling Hinds 11-9 and 11-3. T.J. Dunsford continues to be an offensive catalyst for the Bobcats, and Chase Russell and Josh Lee have emerged as stalwarts on the mound. The most intriguing team at the moment might be Meridian (18-10), which took two Tuesday from 21st-ranked Gulf Coast, 9-8 and 3-0. The Eagles have won five straight after a six-game losing streak. Connor Gehr, the ace of the Eagles’ pitching staff, got a walk-off hit in the 13th inning to beat Gulf Coast in Game 1 at Scaggs Field. Peyton Fowler (2-1) then went out and threw a two-hitter in the second game. Brennon Wright (.373), Tyrus Williams (.289, five homers) and Brayden Martin (.310, 19 steals) have paced Meridian’s hitters. MCC is at Delta on Saturday, while Jones visits Northeast. Pearl River goes to Holmes and ECCC to Itawamba. … The MACCC weekly honors went to East Miss’ Trace Tingle, a Pascagoula native who beat then-No. 1 East Central with a two-hitter last week, striking out nine batters, and Pearl River’s Topher Jones (Hernando), a Mississippi State transfer who hit .583 with a homer and nine RBIs.
