The good news for the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday: They beat Miami 8-3 to keep pace in the American League wild card chase, 2 games back of sizzling-hot Detroit and Kansas City. The bad news: Former Southern Miss standout Matt Wallner, one of the Twins’ top power threats, went on the injured list with an oblique injury. “It sucks. Definitely not something I foresaw happening, so not ideal,” Wallner said in a Sports Illustrated story. Wallner has 13 homers and a .523 slugging percentage in 75 games. … Kansas City, which has won two straight after a seven-game skid, is missing ex-Mississippi State star Chris Stratton and Ole Miss alum James McArthur, both on the IL, from its bullpen. McArthur won’t pitch again in 2024. … J.T. Ginn, rookie righty out of MSU, will get the dubious honor of starting today in the A’s final game at Oakland Coliseum, their home since 1968. They’ll play in Sacramento next season. Ginn is 0-1 with a 4.40 ERA in seven MLB games. He’ll face a Texas club that suits up ex-MSU stars Nathaniel Lowe and Justin Foscue. … MSU alum Eric Cerantola, a Kansas City prospect, pitched the last two innings, allowing one unearned run, as Omaha beat Columbus 5-4 in 11 innings to even the International League Championship Series at 1-all. The deciding game is tonight in Omaha. … Former State and Jackson Prep star Jake Mangum won the IL batting title with a .317 average. The fifth-year pro, 28, finished with six homers, 56 RBIs and 20 steals for Durham in the Tampa Bay organization. … On the occasion of Arkansas winning the 2024 Texas League crown on Wednesday night, here’s a tip of the cap to the 1984 TL champion Jackson Mets and the 1994 Jackson Generals, who reached the finals in dramatic fashion. The ’84 JaxMets, featuring the likes of Lenny Dykstra, Billy Beane and Randy Myers, dominated the TL East in the regular season and beat Beaumont for the pennant in six games. The ’94 Generals, the defending league champs, won the TL East playoffs in one of Smith-Wills Stadium’s most memorable games. Down 1-0 in the bottom of the ninth of the decisive Game 5, the Generals got back-to-back home runs from Tom Nevers and Jeff Ball to stun rival Shreveport 2-1. The Gens, whose best player was Bobby Abreu, lost in the TL Championship Series.

The spotlight is a little brighter in the postseason, and Jacob Gonzalez is showing out in the Southern League playoffs. The ex-Ole Miss standout went 3-for-5 Sunday, including a three-run double that broke the game open in the seventh inning, as Birmingham beat Montgomery 7-2 in the opener of the SL Championship Series. Gonzalez, a lefty-swinging shortstop, is batting .538 with a homer, five RBIs and two steals in four postseason games for the Chicago White Sox’s Double-A club. The 15th overall pick ($3.9 million signing bonus) in the 2023 draft, Gonzalez was promoted from High-Class A Winston-Salem in late May and started hot for Birmingham before cooling down to a .225 average. On the year, he batted .238 with eight homers, 57 RBIs and 17 steals. He’s considered a good glove, but speculation is he’ll eventually move off shortstop. The California native had a stellar career at Ole Miss, helping the Rebels win the 2022 College World Series. Game 2 of the best-of-3 title series is Tuesday in Birmingham. … In the Double-A Eastern League Championship Series, Erie beat Somerset 9-5 in Game 1. Former Mississippi State product Colby White is a bullpen piece for Somerset (New York Yankees affiliate) and ex-William Carey star Patrick Lee a reserve infielder for Erie (Detroit). Neither played in the opener. … The Triple-A postseason begins on Tuesday. Ole Miss alum Doug Nikhazy pitches for Columbus (Cleveland) and MSU product Eric Cerantola for Omaha (Kansas City), who meet in the International League title series. Former State standout Konnor Pilkington pitches for Reno (Arizona), which takes on Sugar Land for the Pacific Coast League crown. P.S. In MLB, All-Star infielder Jordan Westburg returned to Baltimore’s lineup on Sunday, the ex-MSU star going 1-for-4 with an RBI in a loss to surging Detroit. … Emblematic of Kansas City’s struggles, MSU product Hunter Renfroe went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts as the Royals lost for the seventh straight time, 2-0 to San Francisco. The Royals managed three hits and fanned 13 times as they fell into a tie for the second American League wild card with Detroit. Renfroe, who has 13 homers, is in a 1-for-21 slump in his last seven games. … Southern Miss alum Matt Wallner had a hit in each game but couldn’t prevent Minnesota from being swept in a twinbill by Boston (8-1 and 9-3) and tumbling out of a wild card berth in the AL. … On Sept. 23, 2009, former Shannon High and Jackson State standout Dave Clark notched his first win as interim manager for Houston, which beat St. Louis 3-0. A longtime big league slugger and current first-base coach for the Astros, Clark went 4-9 in his lone managerial stint.

On Sept. 17, 1984, Reggie Jackson hit the 500th home run of his Hall of Fame career. But forget that. In the same game, for the same team, Jackson native and former Forest Hill High star Stewart Cliburn made his major league debut. Cliburn pitched the last two innings of California’s 10-1 loss to Kansas City at Anaheim Stadium. The right-hander worked a 1-2-3 eighth inning, striking out the first batter he faced (Greenville native Frank White), then coughed up three runs in the ninth. Cliburn, 27 at the time, pitched in two more seasons for the Angels, posting a 3.11 ERA in 85 appearances overall. In 1985, he was a key reliever for the club, notching nine wins and six saves for a 90-72 team that finished 1 game out of first in the American League West. Cliburn was drafted out of Delta State by Pittsburgh in 1977 and labored in the minors for seven seasons before California gave him a call-up in ’84. Since his playing days ended, Cliburn has worked as a pitching coach at various levels and is currently with the Chicago Dogs of the independent American Association. His twin brother Stan, who also reached the big leagues as a catcher, is the manager of the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs of the indy Atlantic League; he got his 2,000th managerial win this season.

The Pittsburgh Pirates and fans at PNC Park gave Adam Frazier a warm “welcome back” on Friday night. The Pirates played a video tribute to their former star on the stadium scoreboard and the crowd gave him a standing ovation before his first at-bat. “Appreciate them doing that,” the Mississippi State product said in a postgame interview. “Then you gotta lock back in, that’s all I was trying to do right there … .” He did, helping visiting Kansas City — fighting for a playoff berth — roll to an 8-3 victory. Frazier scored twice and hit his fourth home run as the Royals improved to 81-67, second in the American League wild card standings. Frazier was drafted by the Pirates in 2013 and spent his first six MLB seasons in a Pittsburgh uniform. He was traded in mid-2021, which was the last time he played at PNC. He has bounced to four other teams the past four years. A .264 career hitter, Frazier’s first year in KC hasn’t been great — .205, four homers, 20 RBIs, 32 runs over 244 at-bats — but he plays hard and plays anywhere in the field he is needed. He also has postseason experience — with Baltimore in 2023 and Seattle in 2022. P.S. Saucier native Brandon Parker, back near his old stomping grounds at Biloxi’s Keesler Federal Park, homered for the second straight night as the Mississippi Braves beat the Shuckers 7-0 in a Double-A Southern League game. Parker has eight homers on the season. At Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in Perkinston, Parker belted 38 homers in two seasons, setting the school record with 24 as a freshman in 2018. … Ole Miss alum T.J. McCants doubled home the winning run in the 11th inning as Low-Class A Kannapolis beat Charleston 2-1 to advance to the Carolina League Championship Series. McCants, who finished his college career at Alabama in 2024, hit .230 with two homers and four steals this season for the Chicago White Sox affiliate.

With just a couple weeks left in the major league season, four of the five teams in the American League Central are very much in the playoff hunt. And, yes, there are Mississippi products in impactful roles on all of these clubs. To wit: Former Southern Miss star Matt Wallner homered for Minnesota in a win against the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday. It was his 13th of the season, 12th in 51 games since he was recalled from the minors on July 7. Wallner hit a majestic 444-foot blast in the Twins’ win on Tuesday. The Twins, third in the division, are third in the wild card standings, 1.5 games back of Kansas City. The Royals, who swept the Twins last weekend, lost in extra innings to the New York Yankees on Wednesday, falling 4.5 games behind AL Central leader Cleveland. Ex-Mississippi State star Hunter Renfroe, who didn’t play Wednesday, is hitting .240 with 13 homers and 50 RBIs for the Royals. MSU product Adam Frazier (.204) plays a utility role for the team, and James McArthur (Ole Miss) and Chris Stratton (MSU) work out of the bullpen, though both have struggled of late. Cleveland won its third straight on Wednesday, beating the lowly Chicago White Sox. USM alum Nick Sandlin pitched 1 1/3 innings for the Guardians and cherry-picked the victory, his eighth, all in relief. He has nine holds, a save and a 3.78 ERA. Cool moment: In the sixth inning Wednesday, Sandlin faced ChiSox catcher Chuckie Robinson, his batterymate in Hattiesburg back in 2016. Sandlin struck out Robinson on a 3-2 pitch. Lurking in fourth place in the wild card standings is Detroit, just 3 games back of Minnesota. Ex-Biloxi High standout Colt Keith, the Tigers’ rookie second baseman, is batting .262 with 12 homers and 55 RBIs. He was 1-for-3 in a win over Colorado on Wednesday. The battle for postseason spots between the AL Central clubs intensifies next week: The Guardians and Twins meet in a four-game series, while the Tigers and Royals play a three-game set. P.S. Brent Rooker, the former SEC player of the year from MSU, knocked in two runs for Oakland on Wednesday, giving him 101 RBIs on the season. That’s tied for fifth in MLB, third in the AL.

The big game on Monday’s MLB docket was Kansas City-New York, a battle between two playoff-bound clubs at Yankee Stadium. It proved to be a big disappointment for the visiting Royals. The KC bullpen — namely Ole Miss alum James McArthur and Mississippi State product Chris Stratton — imploded, handing the Yankees a 10-4 victory. New York leads the American League East by 1.5 games; Kansas City sits second in the AL Central and the wild card race. A home run by ex-MSU star Hunter Renfroe — his 13th — gave the Royals a 4-3 lead in the sixth inning. In the bottom of the seventh, with one out, McArthur — the team’s former closer — came on to face the top of the New York order. Gleyber Torres singled, Juan Soto walked, Aaron Judge singled in the tying run and Austin Wells hit a three-run bomb: 7-4 Yankees. Down goes McArthur. It was his seventh blown save in 25 chances; his record fell to 5-7 and his ERA jumped to 5.01. “We know that is a big spot in the game,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said in an mlb.com article. “We felt really good about him there. It was just one of those nights he wasn’t able to put them away.” It was still 7-4 in the eighth when Stratton came on. He gave up four hits, a walk and three runs, pretty much ending any hopes the Royals might have had of a ninth-inning rally. Tupelo native Stratton, who won a ring with Texas last year, saw his ERA balloon to 5.34. The Royals get two more cracks in this series at the AL’s top team.

Their no-hitter against Pittsburgh notwithstanding, the Chicago Cubs’ postseason hopes may have taken a serious hit Wednesday when Justin Steele, the lefty from Lucedale, went on the injured list with a sore elbow. Staff ace Steele, 5-5 with a 3.09 ERA, was 3-1 in his last seven starts, and the team was 9-4 in his last 13 outings. He’ll be out for a couple of weeks — maybe longer. The Cubs have climbed into the battle for a wild card in the National League, currently sitting fifth in those standings, 4 games behind the fourth-place New York Mets. Steele told reporters Wednesday he aims to return this season. “Justin’s going to pitch if he’s healthy. That’s kind of how we’re progressing right now,” Cubs manager Craig Counsell said in an mlb.com story. … The Kansas City Royals, who snapped a seven-game losing streak on Wednesday, may get ex-Mississippi State star Hunter Renfroe back this weekend, per reports. Renfroe, on the IL since Aug. 21 with a hamstring injury, played a rehab game at Double-A Northwest Arkansas on Wednesday and went 0-for-4 with a strikeout and a sac fly for the Naturals. After a slow start to 2024, Renfroe is batting .237 with 12 homers and 47 RBIs for the Royals, who are clinging to the third wild card in the American League. … Former MSU standout Jordan Westburg, out since Aug. 1 with a broken right hand, has begun playing catch and could be close to returning to Baltimore’s lineup, reports say. Westburg, a 2024 All-Star, is batting .269 with 18 homers and 58 RBIs. The Orioles lead the New York Yankees by a half-game in the AL East. … Spencer Turnbull, the Madison Central High alum who was a valuable pitcher for Philadelphia early this season, remains on the 60-day IL (lat strain) but was expected to throw a bullpen session this week. He has been out since June 27, and a time for his return to active duty remains unclear. The right-hander is 3-0 with a 2.65 ERA in 17 games for the Phillies, who hold a seemingly comfortable 7-game lead in the NL East.

Kemp Alderman’s pro career may be following the same path as his career at Ole Miss, where he started slowly before erupting in his final two years. The Decatur native and former Newton County Academy star hit his first home run for High-Class A Beloit on Tuesday, a game-winning shot to right-center field against Peoria. Alderman has hit safely in nine of his last 11 games for the Sky Carp and is batting .256 with nine RBIs and seven runs in 22 games since moving up. He hit .270 with five homers and 30 RBIs in 33 games in Low-A ball this year after batting just .205 with a single bomb in 34 games at that level in his pro debut. Alderman started quietly as a freshman at Ole Miss, rarely playing, then hit .286 with 11 homers for the 2022 College World Series winner. In 2023, he put up one of the best seasons in school history, winning the Ferriss Trophy and earning second-team All-America recognition while batting .376 with 19 homers and 61 RBIs. Miami drafted him in the second round — 47th overall — last summer. At 6 feet 3, 250 pounds, the 22-year-old outfielder has been compared to ex-Mississippi State star and current big league slugger Hunter Renfroe, who has 189 career MLB bombs. Alderman has that kind of power potential, and it is starting to show. Alderman is ranked as the Marlins’ No. 13 prospect by MLB Pipeline. P.S. Nick Sandlin, former All-America pitcher out of Southern Miss, made his first pro start on Monday for Cleveland and fared well: two strikeouts, two walks and a foul out in his one inning. However, the Guardians lost the game to visiting Kansas City and then lost again in the nightcap as their lead in the American League Central slipped to 1 game over the Royals. Sandlin was a lockdown reliever for two years at USM, moved to the rotation for his junior year (2018) and went 10-1 with a 1.06 ERA. He won the Ferriss Trophy, C-USA’s pitcher of the year award and a national player of the year honor. The Guardians drafted him and moved him back to the bullpen, and the right-hander has a 3.26 ERA in 198 MLB games. … Kansas City played without Mississippi State products Hunter Renfroe (on the injured list), Adam Frazier (sitting with a .211 average) and Chris Stratton (5.23 ERA), and ex-Ole Miss standout James McArthur (no longer closing) worked one scoreless inning in Game 1. Frazier is in the lineup tonight for Game 3 of the big series. … Colt Keith has eight RBIs in his last four games, all wins by Detroit. The rookie out of Biloxi High is batting .266 with 12 homers and 52 RBIs. … Ex-USM star Matt Wallner homered in the ninth inning of Minnesota’s loss to Atlanta. His 10th blast of the season was his first off a left-hander (Dylan Lee). … Justin Steele, former George County High standout, is back on the bump today for the Chicago Cubs against Pittsburgh. Steele (4-5, 3.07, overall and 2-0, 1.66, in August) has had problems with Pittsburgh’s Connor Joe, batting .538 with a homer in 15 plate appearances vs. the left-hander, per Baseball Reference’s Matchups to Watch. … Ole Miss alum Lance Lynn, on the IL (knee injury) since July 31 for St. Louis, is expected to make a rehab start this week with Triple-A Memphis. Lynn (6-4, 4.06) threw about 75 pitches in a live practice session Monday, reports said. … Ex-DeSoto Central star Blaze Jordan, out since Aug. 10 after getting hit in the face by a pitch, was activated today by Double-A Portland. The Boston Red Sox’s No. 26 prospect is hitting .253 with seven homers and 51 RBIs. … Mississippi Braves right-hander Lucas Braun was named to MLB Pipeline’s Prospect Team of the Week after allowing just one run with 20 strikeouts over 13 2/3 innings in two starts last week. Atlanta’s No. 21 prospect is 3-1 with a 2.36 ERA in 10 Double-A starts.

Hunter Renfroe joined the 500-RBI club — a pretty cool milestone — by driving in a pair of runs Friday night with his 12th homer of the year for Kansas City. The ex-Mississippi State standout from Crystal Springs walked twice and scored twice for the Royals, who beat Philadelphia 7-4 in an interleague matchup of playoff contenders. (If anyone is wondering, Dave Parker is the career leader in RBIs among Mississippi natives in MLB with 1,493. Ellis Burks had 1,206.)
David Mershon, a 2024 draftee thrown right into the Double-A fire, banged out two more hits for Rocket City and is batting .324 with three RBIs and five runs over 37 at-bats for the Los Angeles Angels’ affiliate. Mershon, a shortstop, was an 18th-round pick out of MSU, where he was an All-SEC performer.
Cooper Pratt belted his fourth homer, picked up two RBIs and scored twice for High-Class A Wisconsin. The ex-Magnolia Heights High shortstop, Milwaukee’s No. 2 prospect, is batting .228 in 21 games for the Timber Rattlers. A second-year pro, he hit .295 with three homers in 73 Low-A contests before his promotion.
P.S. Jackson Prep product Will Warren will get a fourth crack at his first big league win today when he takes the bump for the New York Yankees against Colorado at Yankee Stadium. Warren, who has 24 minor league victories on his resume, is 0-1 with an 8.59 for the Yanks but pitched well (two runs in five innings) his last time out. … Former Mississippi Braves pitchers Julio Teheran and Nolan Kingham got the win and the save, respectively, for Monterrey in Game 1 of the Mexican League Championship Series. Teheran went five innings as the starter in the 9-5 win over Dos Laredos, Kingham got the last out with a punchout. Teheran, 3-0 with a 3.38 in the LMB postseason, threw a combo no-hitter for the 2010 M-Braves. Kingham, four saves in the postseason, was 6-1 for the 2021 M-Braves championship team.
