a page-turner … so far

Though the book is far from finished, Ole Miss is writing one of the best stories in college baseball. From unranked in preseason — and picked to finish 15th in the vaunted SEC — the Rebels are 24-7 and ranked seventh nationally again this week in Baseball America’s Top 25. The Rebels battled for a 5-4 win in 12 innings at Kentucky on Saturday to win their third straight SEC series. They’re 8-4 in the league. National champs three years ago, UM foundered through the ’23 and ’24 seasons. Coach Mike Bianco rebuilt the roster for 2025 and apparently has found pieces that fit. The Rebels are middle-of-the-pack in the league in hitting (ninth in average) and pitching (12th in ERA). But they’re winning, which is all that really matters. In that 12-inning victory at Kentucky, they took a lead in the 11th, then lost it. Undaunted, they got a clutch two-run homer from Luke Hill — a .353 hitter — in the final frame and an heroic save from Alex Canney, who has a 1.50 ERA. A big week looms. The Rebels visit longtime rival Memphis on Tuesday, host undermanned Alcorn State on Wednesday and then welcome No. 4 Tennessee to Swayze Field for a weekend series that could define the season. The Vols, defending national champs, are 28-4 and 9-3 and no doubt plenty angry after losing a series at Texas A&M in ugly fashion (17-6 in the finale). UM fans are no doubt eager to see how the next chapter of this season is penned. P.S. Whenever there’s a list, there’s usually a Mississippian on it. Since 2007, Barry Bonds’ last season, San Francisco has started a different left fielder on opening day every year — 18 all told. Fred Lewis, former Stone County High and Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College standout, is on the list. He was in left field on April 7, 2009, and he went 1-for-4 with a walk and two runs — plus an error — in a 10-6 win over Milwaukee at AT&T Park. In 2009, Lewis was in the fourth year of a seven-year MLB career in which he batted .266.

a rare feat

In the course of putting up video game numbers on Friday, Pearl River Community College pulled off an exceedingly rare feat. The Wildcats, the No. 2-ranked team NJCAA Division II, scored in every inning — 12 of them — in a 24-6 and 20-0 sweep of Itawamba CC at Fulton. “We capitalized on runners in scoring position,” PRCC coach Michael Avalon said in a school release. “We were disciplined with the strike zone. … Today, we cashed in throughout the day.” They scored 44 runs on 27 hits. They had a seven-run inning in Game 1 and five- and six-run frames in Game 2. Freshman Topher Jones drove in 11 runs on the day, including a (likely) school record eight in the opener, when he hit two homers. The Hernando High product, a midyear transfer from Mississippi State, is batting .320 with four homers and 42 RBIs. Caston Thompson had four RBIs in Game 1, and Jackson Hood chipped in three in Game 2. Jacob Johnson got the win in the second game, a five-inning contest, to improve to 8-1. The Wildcats are 33-5 and 13-1 in the MACCC. ICC is 19-17 and 6-10. … East Central (31-7, 13-3, nine straight wins) and Jones College (27-8, 13-3, eight straight wins), both nationally ranked, stayed on heels of The River with conference sweeps of their own on Friday. P.S. In a matchup of teams with 1-8 SEC records, Mississippi State fell to South Carolina 7-3 Friday night at Starkville’s Dudy Noble Field. MSU, nationally ranked in preseason, is now 17-13 overall. The SEC is a tough league. Since winning the national title under Chris Lemonis in 2021, the Bulldogs are 36-64 in conference games, 110-92 overall. At 1-9 this year, MSU is tied with Florida and Texas A&M for 13th in the 16-team league. Missouri is last at 0-9.

leading the pack

Heading into play today, No. 2-ranked Pearl River Community College still leads the MACCC standings at 7-1 after a sweep of Hinds CC on Wednesday. PRCC’s Jacob Johnson (6-1) leads the league in ERA with a 1.26, and Carson Fair is tops in saves with six. … The league’s most dominant pitcher to date has been Jud Files of Itawamba. He is 7-1, tied for the MACCC lead in wins, with a 2.76 ERA and a league-best 73 strikeouts in 45 2/3 innings. Files, a freshman, is a 6-foot-2 right-hander from Mooreville who originally signed with Mississippi State before transferring. ICC visits Copiah-Lincoln today for a twinbill which might pit Files against the Wolves’ Jennings Kimbrell, also 7-1 with a 2.54. Files’ teammate Evan McCarthy leads the conference in hitting with a .410 average for the Indians (18-12, 5-5). Co-Lin’s Tucker Jones has 24 steals, a league-high. … Resurgent Gulf Coast, 24-10 and 6-2 under first-year coach Zach Allen, features the league home run leader in Dom Jackson, who has 10. The Bulldogs host No. 23 Northeast (7-3 in the league, tied for third) today. … Barret Rodgers of fourth-ranked East Central (25-7, 7-3) tops the loop in RBIs with 35; he is batting .392 with seven homers. … Sixth-ranked Jones College is also 7-3 in the MACCC, and Meridian sits sixth at 6-4. P.S. Kudos to Ole Miss’ Hunter Elliott, who is tied for the SEC lead in wins after beating Florida 7-5 on Thursday night. The lefty from Tupelo, coming back from two seasons lost to injury, went 5 2/3 innings against the Gators, allowing three runs on a home run in the third inning. “One of the reasons he’s so good, he gets better … he answers the bell,” Ole Miss coach Mike Bianco said in a postgame interview. Elliott hung up zeroes in the fourth and fifth and got the first two outs in the sixth while the Rebels (20-5, 5-2 SEC) were surging ahead for their fifth straight win. Elliott, 5-0 in seven starts, has a 3.12 ERA and 47 strikeouts — seven on Thursday — in 34 2/3 innings. … UM alum Drew Pomeranz, the veteran left-hander, has re-signed with Seattle on a minor league deal. He hasn’t pitched in the majors in four years.

a short fall

Pearl River Community College lost its grip on the No. 1 ranking in the NJCAA Division II poll after going 3-1 last week. Now ranked No. 2, PRCC (25-5, 5-1 MACCC) split a twinbill against then-No. 4 East Central CC and blasted then-No. 24 Holmes two times. The Wildcats have 11 wins against ranked teams, per the school website. Caston Thompson, a Brookhaven Academy product, leads PRCC hitters at .390 with six homers, 24 RBIs and 30 runs. Jacob Johnson, out of Pearl River Central High, threw five shutout innings at Holmes and is 6-1 with a 1.26 ERA. … ECCC (23-7, 5-3), ranked No. 1 two weeks ago, remained fourth in the national poll after a 2-2 week. Jones (19-8, 5-3) is 10th after losing two heartbreakers to Northeast on Saturday. Northeast (19-13, 6-2), freshly ranked No. 23, won 7-6 on a walk-off HBP and 2-1 on a walk-off knock by Kody Gilmore. Northeast’s stars included Layth Holliday, who drove in four runs in Game 1, and Dean McCallum, who tossed a five-hitter in Game 2. Also at 6-2 in the league is unranked Meridian (19-11), which got one of the best performances of the season by Brennon Wright, a Starkville High alum who hit for the cycle and stole two bases in a 29-9 victory Saturday against Delta. MCC ran out of ammo in Game 2 and lost 6-3. The big game upcoming is Jones hosting Meridian on Wednesday. P.S. After a show of power that swept away Missouri over the weekend, Ole Miss moved up to No. 15 (from 19) in Baseball America’s new poll. Isaac Humphrey, a Louisville transfer, belted four homers and drove in 13 runs in that series for the Rebels, now 18-5, 4-2 SEC. They’ll face No. 19 Florida in Oxford next weekend. The top five teams — and 11 of the top 19 — in the BA poll are SEC schools. No. 5 LSU hosts scuffling Mississippi State (15-9, 1-5) next weekend. Southern Miss, which beat Ole Miss last week in Pearl and swept Louisiana-Monroe on the road over the weekend, is No. 23 in the BA poll. The Golden Eagles are 18-6, 5-1 Sun Belt. … It’s been a rough start to the SWAC season for the Mississippi schools. Alcorn State is 0-6, Mississippi Valley State 0-5 and Jackson State 2-4. Senior Erick Gonzalez, one of JSU’s best arms, got shelled on Sunday, surrendering 10 runs in three innings in a rubber-game loss to Bethune-Cookman at Braddy Field. Valley (4-9 overall), for whatever reason, has had 13 games cancelled this season. … The top five in the new MaxPreps Mississippi poll has Magnolia Heights and Lewisburg at 1-2 again, followed by Madison Central, Hartfield Academy and Ocean Springs. Purvis, Jackson Academy and Southeast Lauderdale slipped to the second five.

hot spots

Big weekend in the Magnolia State. Where to start? Conference play begins for the NCAA Division I schools, and there are Top 25 SEC matchups in Oxford (Arkansas at Ole Miss) and Starkville (Texas at Mississippi State). In Hattiesburg, Southern Miss, also nationally ranked in various polls, welcomes Old Dominion to launch Sun Belt play. Not to be overlooked by any means is Valdosta State-Delta State in Cleveland. DSU, 17-5 and ranked 12th nationally in Division II, leads the Gulf South Conference with a 10-2 mark, and the visiting Blazers are a tick behind at 9-2. Senior right-hander Drake Fontenot, the Statesmen’s No. 1 starter, has not allowed a run in his last four starts. The reigning D-II South Region and GSC pitcher of the week, the 6-foot-5 Louisiana native is 5-0 with a 0.68 ERA, 46 strikeouts and seven walks in 39 2/3 innings. He’ll face a Valdosta lineup that includes the GSC’s leading hitter, Marcus Sevillano (.466), and top RBI man, Orlando Pena (32 with seven homers). Brett Burrell paces the Statesmen’s attack at .465 with five homers and 30 RBIs. DSU is unbeaten (10-0) at Ferriss Field. Of note: Mississippi College, which has won eight straight and climbed into the D-II South Region rankings at No. 8, travels to Cleveland, Tenn., to meet Lee University in a GSC series. MC is 15-8, 8-4 in the league. P.S. In the jucos, Holmes Community College, Jones College and Mississippi Gulf Coast CC all opened MACCC play this week with doubleheader sweeps. Holmes, ranked No. 24 in NJCAA D-II, is 19-4 overall and 16-1 in Goodman. The Bulldogs travel to Copiah-Lincoln (17-10, 1-1) today. Former Brandon High star Xavier Myles has sparked Holmes at the plate, batting .389 with five homers, 29 RBIs and seven steals — top 10 in the MACCC in each category. … No. 2-ranked Pearl River (20-4 with eight straight wins) opens league play Sunday vs. Northwest in Poplarville.

preseason poll-pourri

A dose of perspective is necessary when digesting the SEC coaches preseason poll released on Wednesday. Mississippi State is ranked ninth, in the bottom half of the 16-team league. Seems a bit disrespectful for a Bulldogs team that won 40 games and made the NCAA Tournament in 2024 and is a consensus top 20 in the national polls, of which there are many. Such is life in the dog-eat-dog SEC, which has the top four teams and seven of the first 10 in Baseball America’s national Top 25. MSU is No. 18 in the BA poll as well as the d1baseball.com rankings plus No. 19 in the NCBWA and USA Today polls. Ole Miss, which has one of the best newcomer classes in the nation (per BA), is pegged to finish 15th in the SEC but still got votes in the NCBWA and USA Today national polls. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see the Rebels in a regional this spring. Southern Miss was picked as the preseason No. 1 in the Sun Belt coaches poll. The Golden Eagles, an NCAA Tournament team as the SBC champion in 2024, show up in only one national poll, ranked 27th (in a Top 30) by the NCBWA. USM got votes in the USA Today poll. Jackson State also got some votes in the NCBWA poll and is ranked third among large school HBCUs by Black College Nines. The Nos. 1 and 2 teams are also SWAC schools: Grambling State and Bethune-Cookman. All of this will start shaking out a week from today when the NCAA Division I season launches. … Of note: MaxPreps named Sumrall High, the defending MHSAA Class 4A champion, as the “best team” in Mississippi heading into the 2025 campaign. East Union’s Landon Harmon and Purvis’ Jacob Parker are on MaxPreps’ preseason All-America squad. P.S. Itawamba Community College’s Madden Butler (Corinth) was named the NJCAA Division II player of the week after batting .545 with two homers, six RBIs and seven runs in the Indians’ 3-1 start last week. … East Central CC, ranked No. 2 in the juco D-II preseason poll, opened its season on Thursday with a 14-4 win over South Arkansas.

riding the wave

David Mershon was the 532nd pick in the MLB draft back in July. So far, that looks like a steal for the Los Angeles Angels. Mershon, an All-SEC shortstop at Mississippi State this year, is excelling in the Arizona Fall League after a productive start to his pro career this summer at the Double-A level. The 5-foot-7, 175-pound Mershon went 2-for-3 with two walks, a triple, an RBI and two runs for Mesa on Monday. The 21-year-old South Carolina native is batting .250 with a .451 on-base percentage, ranking second in walks (13) in the star-studded AFL. He has two triples, seven RBIs, 10 runs and four stolen bases in 13 games as one of just two 2024 draftees originally assigned to the AFL. Mershon hit .347 at State this season with six homers and 27 steals. The Angels nabbed him as a sophomore-eligible and promptly sent him to Double-A Rocket City, where he answered the challenge with a hit in his first pro game. He batted .254 (.326 OBP) with five bags in 29 games overall in the Southern League. … Ex-Ole Miss star Kemp Alderman (a Miami prospect) is batting .306 with six homers in nine games for Peoria in the AFL, and UM alum Tim Elko (Chicago White Sox) has three homers and a .225 average in 10 games for Glendale. P.S. Postseason flashback: Former Mississippi State standout Hunter Renfroe’s 94.9 mph outfield assist in Game 4 of the 2020 World Series remains the hardest throw for an outfield assist in the Fall Classic since such stat-tracking began in 2015. Los Angeles’ Teoscar Hernandez made a 93.9 mph throw — third on the list — to nab New York’s Giancarlo Stanton at the plate on Monday night. Renfroe, playing for Tampa Bay in 2020, registered two assists in Game 4 of the 2020 Series against the Dodgers, cutting down runners at second and third base. He also homered in that game, which the Rays won before ultimately dropping the series.

the big step

It wasn’t smooth sailing for J.T. Ginn, but the former Mississippi State standout from Brandon arrived in the big leagues on Tuesday and was in the bullpen for Oakland’s game against Tampa Bay. Ginn, 25, was 4-3 with a 5.72 ERA at Triple-A Las Vegas (where ERAs tend to run high) and 8-4 with a 5.26 overall in 2024. He was primarily a starter in the minors but is expected to fill a relief role for the A’s. Ginn was a two-way star at Brandon High when the Los Angeles Dodgers drafted him in the first round in 2018. He passed on a lot of money, chose to attend MSU and was the SEC freshman of the year in 2019. An elbow injury early in 2020 led to Tommy John surgery, but the New York Mets drafted Ginn in the second round that summer as a draft-eligible sophomore. The Mets traded him to the A’s in March of 2022 in the deal for big leaguer Chris Bassitt. Ginn, 6 feet 2, 200 pounds, has endured myriad injuries while in the A’s system but appeared in 21 games (20 starts) this season between Double-A and Triple-A. He allowed just two runs in 12 innings in his last two outings, both wins.

whatever happened to …

Ethan Small, former SEC pitcher of the year at Mississippi State and a first-round draft pick in 2019, is currently on a rehab assignment in San Francisco’s minor league system. The 27-year-old left-hander pitched relatively well in his first three outings for Triple-A Sacramento but got whacked on Tuesday, surrendering four runs while getting just one out. His ERA over eight rehab appearances all told is 9.00. After going 10-2 with a 1.93 ERA in Starkville in 2019, Small was the 28th overall pick by Milwaukee in that year’s draft. Despite some success in the minors, he made just four big league appearances with the Brewers — 8.71 ERA in 10 1/3 innings — before they traded him to San Francisco this February. The Giants put him on their 40-man roster but also put him on the 60-day injured list with an oblique strain. He made his first rehab appearance on July 16 in rookie ball. It seems unlikely that he’ll have an impact with the Giants this season.

travel plans

Mississippi State, snubbed as a regional host, will pack its bags and head to California this week, if Baseball America’s NCAA Tournament projections are accurate. BA has State ranked 15th in its latest poll but seeded second in the Santa Barbara Regional, where 18th-ranked UCSB of the Big West is the No. 14 national seed. The actual regional assignments for the 64-team field will be announced later today. Southern Miss, champion of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament and ranked 22nd by BA, is projected to travel to Tallahassee, Fla., where Florida State is the No. 8 national seed. Five SEC teams got regionals, including Georgia, which was knocked out of the SEC Tournament in the first round. No Sun Belt team is hosting; Louisiana-Lafayette is projected to make the field, as a 2-seed like USM. P.S. Defense, or lack thereof, often makes a difference when the heat is on in postseason play, as both USM and Jackson State witnessed on Sunday. USM benefited from a pair of errors by Georgia Southern in the ninth inning of the Golden Eagles’ 14-11 win in Sunday’s SBC tourney title game. USM scored five times in the ninth, three of the runs unearned. (USM, error-free on Sunday, also got plenty of offense from the likes of Dalton McIntyre, Davis Gillespie and Slade Wilks, plus another lockdown relief effort from Colby Allen.) Jackson State took a one-run lead into the bottom of the ninth but committed a pair of costly errors, helping Grambling State win 6-5 and claim the SWAC Tournament title and automatic bid to the NCAAs. JSU made four errors all told, leading to three unearned runs. Grambling did not make an error.
