With just a couple weeks left in the major league season, four of the five teams in the American League Central are very much in the playoff hunt. And, yes, there are Mississippi products in impactful roles on all of these clubs. To wit: Former Southern Miss star Matt Wallner homered for Minnesota in a win against the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday. It was his 13th of the season, 12th in 51 games since he was recalled from the minors on July 7. Wallner hit a majestic 444-foot blast in the Twins’ win on Tuesday. The Twins, third in the division, are third in the wild card standings, 1.5 games back of Kansas City. The Royals, who swept the Twins last weekend, lost in extra innings to the New York Yankees on Wednesday, falling 4.5 games behind AL Central leader Cleveland. Ex-Mississippi State star Hunter Renfroe, who didn’t play Wednesday, is hitting .240 with 13 homers and 50 RBIs for the Royals. MSU product Adam Frazier (.204) plays a utility role for the team, and James McArthur (Ole Miss) and Chris Stratton (MSU) work out of the bullpen, though both have struggled of late. Cleveland won its third straight on Wednesday, beating the lowly Chicago White Sox. USM alum Nick Sandlin pitched 1 1/3 innings for the Guardians and cherry-picked the victory, his eighth, all in relief. He has nine holds, a save and a 3.78 ERA. Cool moment: In the sixth inning Wednesday, Sandlin faced ChiSox catcher Chuckie Robinson, his batterymate in Hattiesburg back in 2016. Sandlin struck out Robinson on a 3-2 pitch. Lurking in fourth place in the wild card standings is Detroit, just 3 games back of Minnesota. Ex-Biloxi High standout Colt Keith, the Tigers’ rookie second baseman, is batting .262 with 12 homers and 55 RBIs. He was 1-for-3 in a win over Colorado on Wednesday. The battle for postseason spots between the AL Central clubs intensifies next week: The Guardians and Twins meet in a four-game series, while the Tigers and Royals play a three-game set. P.S. Brent Rooker, the former SEC player of the year from MSU, knocked in two runs for Oakland on Wednesday, giving him 101 RBIs on the season. That’s tied for fifth in MLB, third in the AL.

Nothing like a first-inning home run to energize your team. Jake Mangum, the former Mississippi State standout from Flowood, led off Sunday’s game with a bomb for Durham, sparking Tampa Bay’s Triple-A club to a 15-5 rout of Columbus. It was the fifth homer of the season for minor league veteran Mangum, who went 3-for-6 to lift his average to .323, easily the best in the International League. He has 49 RBIs, 54 runs and 16 steals in 93 games for the Bulls. In the big leagues, Nathaniel Lowe, another MSU alum, went yard in the first frame for Texas, which went on to beat the Los Angeles Angels 7-4. The defending World Series champion Rangers have faded from playoff contention, but Lowe has picked up his game of late: .333 (.431 OBP) over his last 15 games. He is batting .263 (.358 OBP) with 12 homers and 53 RBIs on the year. Down in the Midwest League, ex-Magnolia Heights star Cooper Pratt smacked a first-inning homer — against former Southern Miss ace Tanner Hall — as High-Class A Wisconsin beat Cedar Rapids 10-3. Shortstop Pratt, Milwaukee’s No. 2 prospect, has five homers for the Timber Rattlers and is hitting .221 in 23 games with the team. The second-year pro hit .295 in Low-A before his promotion. P.S. The postseason starts Tuesday for teams in the Class A levels. Pratt’s Wisconsin club will play Quad Cities in the first round of the MWL postseason. Ex-USM star Dustin Dickerson plays shortstop for Quad Cities, a Kansas City affiliate. … Bowling Green, a Tampa Bay affiliate featuring MSU products Colton Ledbetter and Kamren James, faces Rome in the High-A South Atlantic League playoffs. Former Smithville High standout Jared Johnson pitches for Rome, an Atlanta affiliate. … Connor Hujsak, another 2024 draft pick out of State, is an outfielder for Charleston, a Tampa Bay affiliate in the Low-A Carolina League postseason. Southaven native and Northwest Mississippi Community College product Dalton Fowler pitches for the RiverDogs, who’ll face Kannapolis in the first round. Ole Miss alum T.J. McCants plays for the Cannon Ballers (Chicago White Sox). … Tyson Hardin, a 2024 draftee out of MSU, pitches for Carolina, a Milwaukee affiliate that’s also in the Carolina League postseason. … Dakota Jordan, the ex-MSU star from Canton, is on the roster but on the injured list at Low-A San Jose (San Francisco Giants), which is in the California League playoffs. Jordan, a 2024 draftee, was 0-for-7 in two games this season.

The game-winning bomb he hit against Ole Miss back in May no doubt still occupies the top spot on Connor Hujsak’s career highlights page. But his performance on Thursday night in pro ball was pretty special, too. The Mississippi State alum hit three home runs for Low-Class A Charleston in the Tampa Bay system. A 13th-round draft pick in July, Hujsak is batting .297 with four homers and 21 RBIs in 19 games for Charleston this season. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound outfielder hit .325 with nine homers for MSU this season, his second in Starkville. His walk-off two-run shot against Ole Miss in the SEC Tournament elimination game is one Bulldogs fans won’t soon forget. … Interestingly enough, the Rays have three other Mississippi college products in their minor league chain: Jake Mangum (MSU) in Triple-A, Matthew Etzel (Southern Miss) in Double-A and Colton Ledbetter (MSU) in High-A. Mangum leads the International League in hitting, while Etzel (No. 25) and Ledbetter (No. 22) are among Tampa Bay’s Top 30 prospects. P.S. In the big leagues, ex-State star Brent Rooker hit two homers for Oakland, his fourth multi-homer game of the season giving him 35 all told. The single-season homer record for Mississippians (native or school alum) in MLB is 47, which former Bulldogs star Rafael Palmeiro reached twice (1999 and 2001). … Tyreque Reed, the Houlka native who played at Itawamba Community College, led the independent Frontier League in hitting this year with a .341 average. The veteran pro hit 12 homers and drove in 52 runs for Washington, which finished with the best record in the league at 67-28. The playoffs began Thursday.

History will show that Ocean Springs native Garrett Crochet was the losing pitcher in the 2024 Chicago White Sox’s franchise-record 107th loss. From the Small Consolation Dept.: History will also show that Crochet tied an American League record by striking out the first seven New York Mets batters he faced in Sunday’s 2-0 loss at Guaranteed Rate Field. To be sure, there have been positives for Crochet in what has been an abject disaster of a season for his team. Starting for the first time since his college days at Tennessee (2018-20), the 25-year-old left-hander made the AL All-Star team in his fourth big league campaign. He has a 3.61 ERA (but just a 6-10 record) and ranks third in the league with 188 strikeouts. He won five times in a seven-game stretch in May and June, earning AL pitcher of the month honors for June. He celebrated his last win on June 7; that’s how bad the ChiSox have been. Sunday’s strikeout streak “was cool,” Crochet said in an mlb.com piece. “Sadly, I kind of wasted a lot of pitches in that time. So it kind of ate into my pitch count ….” Now on a strict pitch limit, he threw 56, one of which Francisco Lindor smacked out of the park, the lone run Crochet allowed in 3 1/3 innings. Former Southern Miss star Chuckie Robinson was behind the plate for Crochet’s stint. … For the record, Gulfport native Bill Melton was on the 1970 White Sox team that lost 106 games, hitting 33 home runs. P.S. Ex-Mississippi State standout Justin Foscue, back in the big leagues with Texas, started at first base Sunday, walked and scored a run in the Rangers’ win over Oakland. … Ole Miss product Lance Lynn’s rehab start with Triple-A Memphis didn’t go too well: five runs, eight K’s in 3 2/3 innings; he has been on St. Louis’ injured list since July 31. … With MLB rosters expanding to 28 this month, it would be nice to see Colorado give a call to Hunter Stovall, the former State star who has been in the system since 2018. The 5-foot-6 second baseman, who hit a walk-off homer on Saturday at Triple-A Albuquerque, is batting .280 with six homers, 35 RBIs and 11 steals. He isn’t on the 40-man roster, so his chances of a promotion are slim. … Southern Miss product Matthew Etzel, who has scuffled at Double-A Montgomery since being traded by Baltimore to Tampa Bay, banged out four hits on Sunday to lift his average to .242 with four homers and 13 RBIs in 27 games. He is batting .278 with 10 homers and 45 steals overall in his first full pro season.

Cincinnati’s Great American Ballpark isn’t the place you’d choose for your first major league start, but J.T. Ginn handled Thursday’s appearance at that launching pad relatively well. The ex-Mississippi State star from Brandon went to the bump for Oakland and retired the first eight Reds batters he faced before Will Benson homered. Ginn yielded another home run in the fourth inning and a couple runs in the fifth but left with a lead. The A’s couldn’t hold it and ultimately lost 10-9. Ginn allowed four hits and a walk and struck out four. In three MLB appearances, the 25-year-old righty has a 5.19 ERA and eight K’s in 8 2/3 innings. He was 15-16 with a 4.68 over four minor league campaigns prior to his call to The Show earlier this month. … MSU alum Gavin Collins is enjoying a career revival at Triple-A Memphis in the St. Louis organization. He went 2-for-2 with a three-run homer Thursday in the Redbirds’ 18-2 win against Iowa and is batting .271 with seven homers and 27 RBIs in 50 games. The versatile Collins, 29, who has played primarily catcher this year, was drafted by Cleveland back in 2016. He became a free agent in 2022, signed with Tampa Bay, got released and then batted .314 with 10 bombs in the independent American Association last season before signing with St. Louis. … Mississippi College product Blaine Crim and ex-MSU standout Justin Foscue homered for Triple-A Round Rock, providing all the offense in a 3-1 win over Oklahoma City. Crim has 17 homers, Foscue nine for the Texas farm club. … Ex-Southern Miss and Mississippi Braves star Hurston Waldrep allowed one run over five innings for Triple-A Gwinnett and has a 4.50 ERA in six games for the Stripers. The 2023 first-round pick may yet get another look in Atlanta, where he was shelled (13 runs in seven innings) in two outings earlier this season. … K.C. Hunt, signed as an undrafted free agent out of MSU by Milwaukee last year, will make his fourth start tonight for Double-A Biloxi, where he is 0-2 despite a 3.31 ERA. Hunt, the Brewers’ No. 29 prospect, has pitched at three levels this season and has a 7-3 record, 2.21 ERA and 123 strikeouts in 85 2/3 innings. … Kudos to Jason Heyward, the former M-Braves star who smacked a two-run double in his second at-bat for resurgent Houston, which beat Kansas City 6-3. Heyward, a 15-year MLB vet, was released by the Los Angeles Dodgers last week.

Nick Sandlin, former All-America pitcher out of Southern Miss, made his first pro start on Monday for Cleveland and fared well: two strikeouts, two walks and a foul out in his one inning. However, the Guardians lost the game to visiting Kansas City and then lost again in the nightcap as their lead in the American League Central slipped to 1 game over the Royals. Sandlin was a lockdown reliever for two years at USM, moved to the rotation for his junior year (2018) and went 10-1 with a 1.06 ERA. He won the Ferriss Trophy, C-USA’s pitcher of the year award and a national player of the year honor. The Guardians drafted him and moved him back to the bullpen, and the right-hander has a 3.26 ERA in 198 MLB games. … Kansas City played without Mississippi State products Hunter Renfroe (on the injured list), Adam Frazier (sitting with a .211 average) and Chris Stratton (5.23 ERA), and ex-Ole Miss standout James McArthur (no longer closing) worked one scoreless inning in Game 1. Frazier is in the lineup tonight for Game 3 of the big series. … Colt Keith has eight RBIs in his last four games, all wins by Detroit. The rookie out of Biloxi High is batting .266 with 12 homers and 52 RBIs. … Ex-USM star Matt Wallner homered in the ninth inning of Minnesota’s loss to Atlanta. His 10th blast of the season was his first off a left-hander (Dylan Lee). … Justin Steele, former George County High standout, is back on the bump today for the Chicago Cubs against Pittsburgh. Steele (4-5, 3.07, overall and 2-0, 1.66, in August) has had problems with Pittsburgh’s Connor Joe, batting .538 with a homer in 15 plate appearances vs. the left-hander, per Baseball Reference’s Matchups to Watch. … Ole Miss alum Lance Lynn, on the IL (knee injury) since July 31 for St. Louis, is expected to make a rehab start this week with Triple-A Memphis. Lynn (6-4, 4.06) threw about 75 pitches in a live practice session Monday, reports said. … Ex-DeSoto Central star Blaze Jordan, out since Aug. 10 after getting hit in the face by a pitch, was activated today by Double-A Portland. The Boston Red Sox’s No. 26 prospect is hitting .253 with seven homers and 51 RBIs. … Mississippi Braves right-hander Lucas Braun was named to MLB Pipeline’s Prospect Team of the Week after allowing just one run with 20 strikeouts over 13 2/3 innings in two starts last week. Atlanta’s No. 21 prospect is 3-1 with a 2.36 ERA in 10 Double-A starts.

Between April and November of 2022, Brent Rooker was a baseball vagabond. The Mississippi State alum — a first-round draft pick in 2017 — bounced from Minnesota to San Diego to Kansas City, getting into only 16 big league games during the ’22 season. He was designated for assignment by the Royals after the season and claimed on waivers by Oakland, where he has not just found a home but thrived. Rooker hit his 30th home run of 2024 on Saturday, giving home 30 bombs in back-to-back years. The right-handed slugger became the 10th Oakland batter to accomplish that feat, a list that includes Mark McGwire, Jose Canseco, Reggie Jackson and Jason Giambi. “It’s pretty special. He’s going to continue to impress. What’s so great about Rook is he’s so humble, too, for the success he’s having,” A’s manager Mark Kotsay said in an mlb.com story. Rooker was an All-Star in 2023 and has been ever better this season, despite not making the Midsummer Classic roster. After Saturday’s 3-for-4 effort, he is batting .289 with 22 doubles, 87 RBIs and 62 runs. He ranks fifth in the American League in slugging, sixth in homers and seventh in OPS. The 402-foot homer Rooker hit at Oakland Coliseum on Saturday was the 70th of his career; the first came on Sept. 8, 2020, with Minnesota. P.S. Two other Mississippi products homered in MLB on Saturday: Biloxi High alum Colt Keith hit his 12th for Detroit and ex-Southern Miss standout Matt Wallner his ninth for the Twins. Austin Riley (DeSoto Central) is second to Rooker on the all-Mississippi homer list with 19, and Jordan Westburg (MSU) has 18. Both are out with injuries that may be season-ending. Hunter Renfroe (MSU) has 12 and Nathaniel Lowe (MSU) 10. … Cal Conley, once a rated prospect in Atlanta’s system, hasn’t hit much for the Mississippi Braves (.227 in two Double-A seasons), but he can pick it at shortstop. In Saturday night’s game at Trustmark Park (a 3-0 loss to Chattanooga), the ex-Texas Tech star made four dazzling defensive plays. He had a hand in three double plays, one unassisted.

He has only four wins in 21 starts, but don’t let that fool you: Justin Steele has been an ace for the Chicago Cubs this season. The ex-George County High star threw seven superlative innings today in a 10-2 win against Detroit at windy Wrigley Field. He allowed just four hits — two by Biloxi High alum Colt Keith — walked none and struck out 10. Steele doesn’t have enough innings to qualify for the official ERA stats — he missed a month-plus at the start of the year with a hamstring injury — but his 3.07 would rank eighth. The 2023 All-Star’s career ERA over four seasons is 3.24. Not a flamethrowing type, he has 125 strikeouts and just 32 walks in 123 innings. The left-hander befuddled the Tigers with pinpoint command, throwing 68 of 94 pitches for strikes. The proverbial “one mistake” he made was surrendering a two-run homer to Spencer Torkelson with one out in the seventh. The Cubs are 63-65, with barely a pulse in the National League wild card race. Imagine where they’d be without Steele. P.S. Tough day for Southern Miss product Nick Sandlin, who made “one mistake” in his outing for Cleveland against the New York Yankees. With the Guardians down 1-0 in the fifth, the sidearming Sandlin was called on to face Aaron Judge with two runners on and one out. Sandlin threw two balls, then walked Judge intentionally. Good call. He got a sac fly from Austin Wells that made it 2-0. One strike from escaping the jam, on a 3-2 pitch, Sandlin gave up a three-run bomb to Giancarlo Stanton. Ouch. The Yankees went on to win 6-0. Sandlin, with a 3.88 ERA, has seven wins, eight holds and a save in 56 appearances — but Thursday was not one of his better days. … Former William Carey standout Patrick Lee, signed as an undrafted free agent by Detroit in May, was promoted to Double-A Erie. He hit .272 with five homers, 29 RBIs and 32 steals at two levels of A-ball.

J.T. Ginn made a pretty impressive big league debut on Wednesday night, one of several noteworthy pitching performances from Magnolia State products in pro ball. Ex-Mississippi State star Ginn, called up by Oakland on Tuesday (see previous post), struck out the side around a walk in his first inning and finished with two hitless innings of relief work in the A’s 4-2 loss against Tampa Bay. … Southern Miss alum Tyler Stuart, making his Triple-A debut in the Washington chain, went 6 2/3, allowing one hit and one run with six strikeouts, to notch the victory for Rochester in a 4-1 win over Lehigh Valley. … Landon Harper, another former USM standout, pitched the last three innings for the Mississippi Braves and earned his first Double-A save in a 4-2 win vs. Chattanooga at Trustmark Park in Pearl. Harper has a 1.46 ERA in 19 appearances, with three holds and two wins. … Tanner Hall, the 2022 Ferriss Trophy winner at USM, allowed two runs in 5 2/3 innings in his second High-Class A start in Minnesota’s system. Hall (two hits, two walks, four K’s) got a no-decision in Cedar Rapids’ 4-3 loss to Dayton. … Cam Schuelke, a 2024 draftee out of MSU by Cleveland, got the last two outs for Low-A Lynchburg in a 3-2 victory vs. Salem and earned his second save. He has not allowed a run in four games. P.S. Ocean Springs native Garrett Crochet, now working limited innings for the Chicago White Sox, yielded two runs in four innings and got a no-decision in the club’s 6-2 win at San Francisco. The All-Star lefty, who has a 3.64 ERA, has pitched four innings or fewer in his last eight starts and is 0-3 in that span. … In the independent Frontier League, ex-Itawamba Community College star Tyreque Reed hit two of the five homers allowed by Belhaven product Brett Sanchez in Washington’s 8-2 win over Joliet. Reed is batting .339 with 10 bombs. Sanchez slipped to 4-6, 4.48 ERA, after allowing eight runs in five innings.

At the end of June, Blaine Crim — a .290 career hitter in the minors — was batting .215 for the Round Rock Express, Texas’ Triple-A club. Suddenly, when the calendar flipped to July, he went off. The ex-Mississippi College star hit safely in 18 of his next 19 games and finished with a .453 average for the month. He hasn’t cooled off much in August. A 3-for-5 game on Tuesday that included his 13th home run boosted his average for the month to .328 (with four bombs) and for the season to .272. Crim was the Gulf South Conference’s hitter of the year in 2019, when he was drafted by Texas, and has been raking for much of his five-year minor league career. He batted .289 with 22 homers at Round Rock in 2023. The 27-year-old first baseman/DH has 96 homers in pro ball. Crim isn’t on the 40-man roster, so his chances of a call from the Rangers are probably slim. Teammate Justin Foscue, who has also had a hot August (.339, three homers), is on the 40-man and already has had a couple of MLB stints this season. With the Rangers fading from postseason contention, Mississippi State alum Foscue, their No. 7 prospect, may well get an extended look in September. In the meantime, the Mississippi products make for quite the tag team at Round Rock. P.S. Former Southern Miss standout Tyler Stuart is scheduled to make his Triple-A debut tonight for Rochester in the Washington system. The 6-foot-9 Stuart, a third-year-pro, had a 2.08 ERA in four starts in Double-A after the Nationals acquired him at the trade deadline from the New York Mets.
